This week on Fashion Star, mentors Jessica Simpson, John Varvatos, and Nicole Richie challenge the designers to create the ultimate summer garment. Also, the Fashion Star contestants must work as groups, putting together three mini fashion shows. Keep reading for all the details!
Buyers: Caprice Willard from Macy’s, Terron E. Shaefer from Saks Fifth Avenue, and Erika De Salvatore from Express.
Team John: Amber Perley, Cassandra Hobbins, Silvia Arguello, and Brandon Scott choose Tropical Vacation as their theme. It’s all about color (for their summer designs) and drama (between Amber and Cassandra) this week. ” Cassandra says Amber’s designs are fairly ordinary, adding, “It’s totally shocking that she hasn’t been up for elimination yet.”
On the Runway: Silvia’s Skirt/Strapless Dress is really pretty and goes to Saks for $75,000. Erika bids $50,000 for Brandon’s Aztec Printed Shorts. Amber’s Flared Beach Pants do not sell. Caprice warns, “Thinks outside of what you personally would like and start thinking about our national customer.” Erika bids $75,000 for Cassandra’s Halter Maxi Dress, saying, “Never in my wildest expectations would I have imagined you creating something like this.”
Team Nicole: Daniel Silverstein, Priscilla Barrosso, and Johana Hernandez work with the theme Summer in the City. Daniel likes the idea of a summer suit, with each designer contributing one piece to the ensemble, but Johana isn’t happy about designing “just” a tank top. In the end, Johana ditches the suit contribution/tank top to create a stand-alone jumpsuit, and Daniel and Priscilla are not happy
about anything with her.
On the Runway: Daniel’s Chelsea Blazer disappoints the mentors and buyers. John says he expects more from Daniel and Terron thinks the blazer is a bit over-engineered. Priscilla’s Soho Short is a miss. Johana’s Strapless Jumpsuit is a hit. Erika places the winning $100,000 bid on behalf of Express, saying, “We all want that jumpsuit. It’s amazing.” Bitch Face One and Bitch Face Two are not happy about Johana’s success.
Team Jessica: Hunter Bell and JesseRay and Garrett Gerson choose Pool Party as their theme. Instead of whining (cough, Priscilla, cough) about the team challenge, JesseRay and Garrett look forward to working with Hunter, who they feel is this season’s front runner. The three designers work really well together – even when Hunter questions her design and makes a last minute change.
On the Runway: Caprice and Terron bid $50,000 and $55,000, respectively, on JesseRay and Garrett’s Empire Dress. Caprice raises her bid to $60,000. Macy’s wins. For the second week in a row, JesseRay and Garrett produce my personal favorite design of the week. Hunter’s Caftan Mini sparks a bidding war between Saks and Macy’s. In the end, Macy’s wins with a bid of $110,000, which means Hunter is the first designer to be bought by all three stores.
Elimination: The mentors nominate Priscilla and Amber for elimination. Caprice votes for Amber and Erika votes for Priscilla. Breaking the tie, Terron chooses to eliminate Priscilla, who says the buyers never gave her designs a chance.
