The Voice Recap: Shakira Has Regrets And Blake Shelton Loses A Country Artist

April 01, 2013 07:10 PM by Lisa Princ

The Voice returned tonight for more blind auditions with incredible talent, some disappointment on Shakira’s part, and Blake Shelton being compared to a Sasquatch?!? But the burning question this season seems to be: Are the other mentors capable of stealing an aspiring Country singer from Blake? Yep, Blake’s worst nightmare happened tonight!

One thing was certain after last week’s premiere of The Voice – Adam Levine and Blake Shelton needed to learn Spanish to keep up with Shakira! Adam Levine was also determined to do something big this season – steal a Country artist from Blake Shelton, but could it be done?

Day three of the blind auditions kicked off with duo The Swon Brothers from Oklahoma, who rocked the stage with their rendition of American Girl. It sounded very overpowered at first by the guitars, but once the vocals came through, they were in. Despite Shakira’s “we’ll have so much fun” pleas, this duo decided to stick with their fellow Oklahoma boy, Blake Shelton.

After Blake was certain that they could take the next audition because, well, Usher had his leg up finally, 17-year-old gymnast, Taylor Beckham hopped on the stage. She gave a very nervous audition, but she was good. Both Usher and Shakira turned almost immediately, and the newbie battle was on. Shakira tried, but Taylor was team Usher all the way.

But while the new mentors enjoy fighting over the hopefuls, they are still that – new. And Shakira proved to make a rookie mistake tonight, more than once! Sam Alves, a Latin artist that almost had Shakira turning around, did not make it, because she stalled. Shakira was completely bummed to learn that she shunned a Latin artist.

Would there be another regret when Karina Iglesias took the stage? Karina showcased powerhouse vocals with her rendition of I’m The Only One. However, she almost did not get through, as Adam and Blake decided to play “You push the button and then I will,” game, but both turned at the end. Shakira was disappointed and “ready to die” when she learned she just shunned another Latina artist. Karina was team Adam.

Next up was a second timer on The Voice. Garrett Gardner, who auditioned last season, was back to prove that he had taken Blake’s advice. Blake was definitely impressed, but it was only Shakira who turned her chair around, loving the raspy sound. Adam and Blake did show him some love though!

A few quickies were shown next: J’Sun, a Soul singer picked up by Shakira; Duncan Kumakana, a Hawaiian Folk artist grabbed by Adam, and Chelsea M, a pop star picked up by Usher.

Holly Tucker, an aspiring Country artist, blew us all away with her angelic voice.  But she also proved a point – it’s tough to get a Country artist to stray from Blake. With four judges to choose from, and despite desperate pleas from Adam, Holly ended up with Blake – shocker.

Self proclaimed nerd, Michelle Chamuel took a risk with Katy Perry’s Kissed A Girl, but she gained an immediate turn from Adam Levine. It was odd, but the mentors saw something in her.  And somehow the conversation turned into whether or not Blake Shelton was a Sasquatch – or Snuffleupagus – because he didn’t turn. Michelle chose team Usher.

Another Nashville artist, Julie Roberts, who had a certified gold album in the past, but hit hard times, was ready to hit the stage with Blake Shelton’s God Gave Me You – great song, but could she pull it off? Nope. And Blake was completely disappointed, because as it turns out, he knew who she was, but her version still stunk.

Cuban child star, Monique Abaddie was also performing a mentor’s song. This time it was Shakira, with her song, Loca. Not only did Shakira not pull a Blake, but Shakira gave Monique a well deserved standing ovation! This girl rocked it! Monique had her choice of all four mentors, but she chose her childhood idol, Shakira.

Warren Stone, another Country hopeful took the stage with a beautiful rendition of Colder Weather by the Zac Brown Band. Adam, in his quest for a Country singer, was the first chair to turn. But then Shakira and Blake turned, much to Adam’s dismay. Adam and Blake were in agreement, they may have just found the next great Country artist, but Blake continued to work his Country magic on Warren. And just as everyone thought that Warren was going to choose Blake, Warren went with team Adam Levine!

I was not too sure of the New Judges, however, “They Rock.” I love the Chemistry these 4 have with each other. Adam & Blake are so much fun, Usher & Shakira are fitting in like pieces to a puzzle that have finally been found. The Voice has always been great, or so we thought. Now it’s a fact, this show is GREAT. Love all the Coaches, especially Adam…he’s Hot!! Hopefully, Usher & Shakira will be here for a long time.
