The Voice Recap: The Battle Round Begins With Epic Performances

April 15, 2013 07:38 PM by Lisa Princ

Last week on The Voice, the blind auditions ended as Blake Shelton was left feeling as though he made a huge mistake. Tonight, the battle rounds began, and with Shakira and Blake both feeling that they had missed out some great talent, would either of them get a steal after some epic performances?

The battle rounds kicked off tonight on The Voice, and this was definitely one of the toughest battle rounds yet!

First up was Adam Levine, who was joined by mentor Hillary Scott of Lady Antebellum. Adam decided to put Amber Carrington and Sasha Allen to battle first. The girls performed Try by Pink, which was a little out of each of their comfort zones. The performance was excellent, and both ladies brought it. All of the coaches loved both performances, and Shakira put it best when she told Adam, “I wouldn’t like to be in your shoes right now.” Adam gushed about how proud he was of both of them, but gave the win to Amber Carrington!

Of course, as soon as he gave Amber the win, the steal buttons were buzzing away by both Usher and Shakira. Part of me wonders if Adam put these strong singers up against one another knowing that neither would be sent packing, what do you think? Sasha decided to join team Shakira!

Shakira was up next with her first battle between Garrett Gardner and lesser known (only because he was a quickie blind audition) J’Sun. With the help of Joel Madden, aka front man for the group Good Charlotte, these guys would be singing How You Like Me Now by The Heavy. Garrett was good, but J’Sun had a stage presence about him that was very impressive. Shakira gave the win to Garrett, and I was really surprised that Usher didn’t steal J’Sun – he seemed to like his performance.

On to Blake Shelton’s first battle of the night between Holly Tucker and Michelle Raitzin. Joining Blake was Sheryl Crow, who helped the girls prepare to tackle Carrie Underwood’s Blown Away. That is a huge song to sing, was Blake setting Michelle up for failure – not to mention, it is a Country song. Nah, Michelle set herself for failure because she was just not as good as Holly. Holly won this battle by a mile, and sadly, Michelle was sent packing.

For Usher’s battle round, he was joined by Pharrell Williams to help with his Texas battle between Jess Kelner and Taylor Beckham. They performed You Know That I’m No Good by the late Amy Winehouse. Personally, I thought Jess had a much stronger performance, and so did Usher, as he granted Jess the win. Blake Shelton was not about to let Taylor get away though, as he stole her!

Blake’s second battle of the night was between Christian Porter and The Swon Brothers, who would be performing Tom Petty’s I Won’t Back Down. Christian worried that he would not be able to hit the high notes, but he did, and his performance was fun. The Swon Brothers were also good, and this was a tough call. In typical Blake fashion, he said it would be easier if, “someone pooped the bed.” For those of you who may not speak Blake language, that means if someone messed up. Blake decided to give the win to The Swon Brothers, and unfortunately, no one chose to steal Christian so it was the end of the road for him.

The final battle of the night was between two of Adam Levine’s biggest powerhouses – Judith Hill and Karina Iglesias. And Adam decided to showcase their power by having them sing James Brown’s It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World. It was by far the best performance of the evening, but left all the coaches calling Adam “stupid” for putting these two artists up against one another. Shakira was in complete awe of the two powerful women on stage. Adam then deemed this “the best battle ever on the show,” before giving the win to Judith. No worries for Karina fans, Shakira sucked her right up for her team, also leaving Shakira with no more steals!

Very disappointed in Shakira because she sent J’Sun home who was the best performer. Garrett was not nearly as good as J’Sun. I also don’t understand why they put their best two against one another?? Adam put Amber and Sasha against one another this was stupid and then he put Judith and Karina.

Adam’s team was so overwhelmingly stacked and favored after the blind auditions that I suspect that the roducers might have pressured him to have Amber and Sasha compete against each other in order to make one of the two powerful singers available to the new judges via the steal option(especially, since it was the 1st battle before any steals had been used).

I agree April, I really enjoyed J’Sun as well. Didn’t it also seem like Usher would steal him? At least that was the impression I got from Usher’s reaction during his performance.
