This week on The Voice, it was the start of the battle round, where we witnessed some epic performances from the start. While some of the contestants made it look flawless, it was not as easy it as it looked. Karina Iglesias, Judith Hill, and some of the other advancing artists spoke to the media recently about their struggles through the battle round!
Judith Hill on the ease of the battle round, or lack thereof:
The battle was more of a challenge because I really had to push myself to sing that song. Because there was a more competitive aspect to the show, I had get out of my confort zone. I’m glad I did it, I learned a lot from it.
Judith on going head to head with Karina Iglesias:
Karina is just awesome. It was hard for me, but once we got on stage I had so much fun with her. I am so happy that we’re both still on the show.
Judith on being deemed an early front-runner by the coaches:
The coaches kind of set me up a little bit. I was nervous, they made the expectation a little high for my own good. I was already coming into the song a little insecure. It made things very stressful, but I just had to work harder and not worry about the expectations.
Garrett Gardner on the difference a year makes: Mostly, my voice has grown. Going from note to note has helped me to control my runs or lack thereof what my voice can do. The experience of not making it on a show, and still having the confidence to come back, helped me grow as a person and as an artist.
The Swon Brothers on Blake Shelton’s song choice for them:
I think we were initially confident in the song because it’s our style. But, it kind of made us more nervous about the possibility of someone beating us at our own game. It was kind of a catch 22 there. Christian came in and absolutely nailed the song, so when that happened the nerves kicked in. All around it was a great battle, and we couldn’t have asked for a better song.
The Swon Brothers’ thoughts as Blake tried to choose the winner:
It was just anxiety. It was kind of bittersweet because you become friends with these people and you don’t want to see them go home, but you don’t want to go home either. It was a big part of the competition, but a small part in the long run. 90 seconds sharing a song with someone is not a lot. We have a lot more we want to get out. Watching Blake try to decide, it was a mixed emotion.
Karina Iglesias on competing against Judith Hill: Going into the battle for me was tough. Judith is incredible, and I give her credit for the battle, it was her idea. My goal was just to stay on the show, and thats what happened, I could have not written it better. I am so glad we’re both still here.
Karina Iglesias on being stolen by Shakira: It was incredible. I think the best thing that happened to me on the show was that I got stolen. The people that got stolen can say they worked with two superstars. Being under Shakira’s wing, I think it’s a better fit. She’s amazing and I think I am right where I belong now. It’s definitely a win-win.
