Andy Cohen is the executive vice president of development and talent at Bravo. He oversees production of such hits as Top Chef and the Real Housewives franchise. Cohen is also the host and executive producer of the late night talk show, Watch What Happens Live. Cohen sat down with SheKnows before taking the stage for his intimate Q&A event with Heather Thomson from The Real Housewives of New York City at the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa in Atlantic City. The Emmy-award winner dished with SheKnows’ Reality TV Magazine about the Real Housewives brand; Bravo; the network’s new line-up of TV show; and his book, Most Talkative!
What can fans expect at your appearance in Atlantic City?
I don’t think I’ve ever been publicly interviewed by a Real Housewife before. Heather has a unique perspective on me because she knows me as an executive as well as a talk show host so I think it will be interesting to see what she comes up with in terms of questions.
Why did you decide to write a book at this stage in your life?
I always wanted to write a book and I always knew the types of stories I wanted to tell. I had a sense that it just felt like the right time and I finally got motivated to go out and sell it. All I needed was a deadline, I’m a very deadline oriented person because I knew what I wanted to do and so it was so fun writing I loved the process.
You have a news background and it’s where you started–did you always want to make the transition to entertainment?
I just kind of burnt out on news after 10 years. I never really thought about it in terms of a specific career path, everything that has happened to me has just been pretty organic actually. I’m grateful for that and I think there’s something to be said for not planning too hard.
Do you miss being in the news environment?
No, (laughs) I really don’t.
Do you have a favorite show on Bravo?
Right now I love Fashion Queens actually, I think it’s hilarious; I always love Top Chef and Flipping Out.
Bravo has added a lot of new programming, are you surprised with the network’s success?
No, I think you build and you build–sometimes when I look at our schedule, I say oh my God we have 500 new hours of new programming next year! It’s a little intense. One that I’m really excited about is a show called, Newlyweds: The First Year. We took four couples and we shot them from their wedding day through their first anniversary so it’s really the anatomy of the first year of marriage.
What do you see for the future of your talk show, Watch What Happens Live?
I just want to keep growing; I want to keep getting guests in the clubhouse. I’ve been getting some good guests. Our big milestone last year was getting Meryl Streep in the clubhouse and there’s someone huge that I’m working on for May right now and if it happens I really will just freak out!
