America’s Got Talent judge, Mel B seems to have landed herself in a legal snafu in the land down under. What’s up? She’s been banned from joining the judge’s panel on Australia’s Got Talent. But why? Keep reading for more details.
According to Contact Music, Mel B signed a contract with Australia’s channel Seven for a spot on the The X Factor. The contract stipulates channel Seven has exclusive rights to Mel’s services until January 31, 2014. All was good and there were no problems until rival network; channel Nine approached Mel offering her a judge’s chair on Australia’s Got Talent.
When channel Seven learned that Mel was scheduled to appear on the rival network’s talent show, they took her to court for breach of contract. A judge ruled an injunction, which will prevent Mel from working for any Australian TV network other than channel Seven until her contract with them has expired. Justice David Hammerschlag explained, “Under the agreement, Mel has an obligation to provide her exclusive services to Seven and Seven is entitled to her performance of this obligation. I see no reason why she should no0t be ordered to keep her word that she would not work for anyone but Seven in Australia in 2013.”
Seven Network indicated that their intention was to use Mel B sporadically throughout the upcoming season of The X Factor, however due to their recent legal battle, their relationship with Mel is strained, and they are not sure how things will proceed at this point.
