Lawsuit Verdict Swings In Donald Trump’s Favor

May 23, 2013 03:29 PM by Donna W. Martin

Donald Trump of Celebrity Apprentice has been in court battling 87-year-old grandmother, Jacqueline Goldberg regarding a dispute over a condominium. And now, the lawsuit verdict is in and Trump has won. Keep reading for more details.

According to the Chicago Tribune, the lawsuit was filed over a condominium dispute at Trumps high-rise Chicago hotel, the Trump International Hotel and Tower. During the trial, Goldberg testified saying that Trump had pulled a fast one on her. How did he supposedly do that? Goldberg explained that after she forked over a $500,000 deposit on two condos at high-rise hotel, Trump yanked away financial incentives including a profit sharing plan at the hotel. And as a result, she was seeking a whopping $6 million in damages!

However, Trump’s attorney argued that Goldberg had signed a contract with Trump that stated he could change the terms at his discretion and as such, Trump hadn’t done anything wrong.

U.S. District Judge, Amy St. Eve presided over the hearing. An eight-member jury consisting of six women and two men deliberated for more than three-hours over two days to reach a verdict. And although the 87-year old grandmother was hoping to cash in on $6 million big ones, it just wasn’t to be. The lawsuit verdict swung in Trump’s favor when a Chicago federal jury failed to award any damages to Goldberg.

What do you think about Trump winning the condominium lawsuit against Goldberg? Do you think Trump duped Goldberg? And do you think he should have won? Or should Goldberg have taken him to the cleaners? We know you have an opinion and we want to hear it so sound off in the comments section and let us know.

With what I’ve come to see in politics, the judicial system, corporate power and influence, and the power of wealth, I can only assume and suspect that Trump bought his way out.

Trump is a typical slippery landlord who obviously took advantage of that woman who probably didn’t read the small print. I think Trump is a weasel that will try to take advantage of people. He was lucky the banks bailed him out in Atlantic City. Obama shamed him at that correspondents dinner with humor. Trump is fortunate that his father Fred was successful due to Shore Haven and Beach Haven, two large apartment house projects and started Donald in the business.

If she had 500 K to plunk down one assumes she has some smart sense. She had the material to read and she signed on the line which in effect says she knew that option could be used at any time. She gambled and she lost. Period!

the sale was for the condo. if goldberg was in it for the profit sharing aspect she should have made it a point that it is the profit sharing that interests her the most and she should have had an adendum signed as part of the contract. can never assume because it makes an out of you and me

Caveat emptor! Trump is a sleazoid, but she or her legal representative should have read the fine print~~no matter how fine it was.

Who was trying to take advantage of who?? Looks like it might have been both ways. I mean,if Mrs.Goldberg hadn’t been so greedy then she might have won! But, No Jury was going to give her 6 million big ones! She lost because she was greedy.
She should have only asked for Actual damages!

The rich get richer, He used the little old lady She should have know that Trump is a liar, she lost because she signed a contract he had no intention of keep his word of given up shares, I just wish the jury would have seen that he robbed the old lady, and he has no problem sleeping at nite. what a dog…………………………

Anyone who would sign a contract where the seller is free to change the terms is almost as crazy as anyone who would write such a contract and then expects to get, and actually does get, $500,000. That’s either shrewd business or so unexpected that an 87-year old woman wouldn’t even look for it.

Wonder how much he paid the jury.

Either that or they were a bunch of dumbarses.

  15. Marsha Says:
    May 23rd, 2013 at 7:52 pm

Just because the jury messed up doesn’t mean Trump was not wrong in pulling the plug on financial incentives. He touted that as a reason to buy the condos, and removing it, even though the terms said he could, was unethical. The jury should have found him at fault and smacked him with 1 or 2 million bucks. Go away Donald Trump–jerk!

Well first it’s sad a grandmother would sue you but for 6 million when she only invested 500,000? As far as winning for Trump, he had a signed contract from her and it was legal. She should have read it before she sued and what kind of an attorney did she have that he couldn’t see she signed the contract with the clause allowing Trump to make changes. She should sue him! He took her for a ride. But all in all, Trump should compensate her out of court just as a “jester” to dear old granny because yes he won legally but she got screwed when he made the changes. If it were not his granny, I wouldn’t say this, but for God’s sake…it’s his granny and he is rich.

From the facts of the case that I had heard, Trump should have won this case hands down. There was plenty of notice and discussion over the issue prior to the signing of the contract. She was way out of line to bring a suit.

Snatching back incentives as a discretionary strategy to sell condos to an 87 year old grandmother may not be illegal, but it is ungodly. Such behavior is not without consequences in this world and the world to come. Trump won a battle I would have never fought. The meek, not greedy bastards, will inherit the earth!

She should have won. He is a cocky, self important, devious, pompous jerk. NOw his kids are following in daddy’s footprints.

  22. jeffrey kicia Says:
    May 24th, 2013 at 5:57 am

Trump won for a reason, because of the grandmothers GREED and the the Contractual consent she signed at the closing which exclusively gave Mr.Trump empowerment to change the conditions of said agreement within non privy discretion. The plaintiff’s Attorney needs to be investigated for professional and legal misconduct unbecoming by an Officer of the Court. Censured at the very Least. Trump is a pompous and pugnacious arse, but Law is paramount in this simplicity verdict, and a waste of resources and money on both sides.

  23. Sandy Says:

Folks seldom take the time to read &/or understand contracts and when things don’t work out in their favor or how they anticipated, they scream “I’ve been duped.” The same thing happened with the mortgage debacle–folks didn’t pay their mortgage payments and yet, when the lenders threaten foreclosure–folks scream “bad banks.” This issue has nothing to do with whether or not one likes Donald Trump–it has everything to do with what is right, what the grandmother signed on for and thank God this jury did the right thing.

The one detail that many seem to be missing is that the specific clause was questioned by the lawyer and by the older lady and they asked that it be taken out. After Trump’s people told them that it would not be deleted, she and lawyer still went ahead with the signature. Come on. No brainer here. She had no right to sue. As one comment above said, “she should sue or stop doing business with that lawyer”.

Clearly someone else was using an elderly woman as a tool, thinking that her age would play well in court…the rich man cheats old lady ruse. Trump is a pretty quirky guy and has a silly TV show…that people seem to enjoy. You might want to stop and listen to a lot of the things that he says should happen in order to fix this country…he is pretty much right on target in his thinking. There is no way he cheated this woman…it was an attempt to get over on him and the court saw through it right away…a win for the legal system.

There has been a host of folks trying to take him down due to, other things, his political beliefs.
By taking down the big guy, you can count on a lot of little ones being quieted.

Great win Trump, go for it!!!!

  33. Patrick Says:
    May 24th, 2013 at 9:32 am

Before you sign a “Contract” read the entire contract. Make sure you understand the entire “Agreement”. You can, and should, consult a lawyer to have them go over the “Document” with you so that you CLEARLY understand what you are about to sign. $.02

  34. Marsh Says:
    May 24th, 2013 at 9:43 am

This is completely inane. It makes absolutely no difference what anyone in the country thinks of Trump or of this dispute. It only mattered what the jury thought. No one commenting here heard the evidence or the judge’s charge to the jury. What anyone other than the jury thinks is completely irrelevant. It is ridiculous for this site to even solicit opinions of an uninformed public.
