Recently, Meredith Phillips, a former star of The Bachelorette, revealed her secret battle with alcoholism, but what really caused the “girl next door” to spiral out of control? As it turns out, Phillips was struggling with much more than she ever let on!
Some folks may be quick to judge those who struggle with alcoholism, but sometimes, when a person hits rock bottom, they feel it is their only way of coping. Could that have been the case with former Bachelorette star, Meredith Phillips? Phillips recently revealed her secret battle with booze, and explained that she is just now starting to get her life back together.
“It began with a lot of ‘Sunday Fundays.’ I would split a bottle of champagne with friends at brunch, then move on to wine,” Phillips told People Magazine. After her split from Ian McKee back in 2005, Meredith became increasingly depressed, and things just got worse from there. Phillips lost her father in 2009 of a sudden heart attack, and when her mother was hospitalized for cancer treatment, Meredith admitted that she drank to numb the pain. “My lowest point was when I realized my mother was in a hospital bed dying and of cancer and I was at her house, drinking myself to death. I just didn’t care,” the 39-year-old went on to reveal.
Luckily for Phillips, her family was there to help and support her. It was Meredith’s brother, Matt who finally confronted her about her drinking problem, and then paid for her to head to rehab. These days, Meredith is looking forward to an alcohol free future, but she knows that she has a long road ahead of her. Thankfully, the love of her family is enough to keep her going.
