Michael Bolton has done it all, from topping the Billboard charts to performing on Dancing With The Stars and even dressing up as Jack Sparrow. Now, the legendary singer has decided to tell all, both in the form of an autobiography, and, more recently, in an exclusive interview with HuffPost Live. Did Michael reveal any juicy secrets during his latest tell-all?
There are few celebrities as talented or fascinating as Michael Bolton. Over the years, the talented singer has accomplished a lot. But even more interesting than the long list of awards Michael has amassed is the even longer list of experiences that has made those accomplishments possible. During a recent interview with HuffPost Live, Michael dished on the many potholes he faced on the road to becoming an international singing sensation.
Musicians often hit it big in their teens or early 20s, but this was certainly not the case for Michael Bolton. The singer told HuffPost Live that years of frustration preceded his first big hit. These struggles began in childhood, which Michael spent living in a broken family of modest means. They extended into adolescence, during which Michael says he was forced to isolate himself from the negative influence of his peers. “What really continued to save me, was, I had this focus on music that isolated me to a certain extent and kept me out of going and hanging out with my friends when I could be creating something with this six-string guitar.”
At sixteen, when he signed his first record deal, Michael thought he’d made it big. He compared the feeling to “signing with the Yankees.” But that euphoria was short-lived, as the label dropped him within a year. That disappointment was followed by another eighteen years of let-downs. But finally, a producer at Columbia recognized Michael’s talent and advised him to channel some of the effort spent writing for other musicians (such as Cher) into his own work.
Obviously, this advise paid off — but Michael insists that, the real force behind his success was a commitment to vocal training. And he advises anyone looking to build a career in music to follow the same route, no matter how hard it may seem. “Great ears will hear whether you’ve done the work or not.”
