Rihanna has blamed for all kinds of things in the past, but spreading herpes?! That’s a first. The former X Factor guest has found herself the subject of accusations related to oral herpes, and the alleged cause? Rihanna’s RiRi Woo lipstick.
Apparently, a Rihanna-endorsed lipstick model is being blamed for a recent outbreak of herpes, but no worries, RiRi wasn’t actually the culprit. Instead, a New York City waitress is suing MAC cosmetics for spreading disease. The waitress alleges that a MAC representative applied an unsanitized tube of Riri Woo lipstick to her mouth. According to the lawsuit, the representative, “didn’t use a fresh or new lipstick tube, but rather one that had been used for other patron.”
Keep in mind that using the same lipstick for multiple consumers is a common practice in much of the United States. After all, how many makeup stands do you see with products marked specifically for testing? But MAC typically makes a policy of sanitizing lipstick tubes after they are used so as not to contribute to the spread of disease.
MAC has largely kept quiet about this recent controversy, but the makeup label isn’t just sitting back. In a recent statement made to The Daily Beast, a MAC representative explained, “Consumer safety is a top priority at MAC Cosmetics, and we take these matters very seriously. We are closely reviewing these claims.”
Do you think MAC holds the responsibility to ensure that all sample lipsticks are sanitized before being applied to customers? Or should consumers be more careful while shopping for makeup? Feel free to share your opinion in the comments section below!
