Ricki Lake Wins Daytime Emmy For Canceled Show

June 17, 2013 12:46 PM by Stephanie Gustafson

Success is the best form of revenge — and Dancing with the Stars alum Ricki Lake proved it the other night by winning a Daytime Emmy for her short-lived talk show. Does the award indicate that canceling The Ricki Lake Show was a bad move?

She may not have been present at the Daytime Emmy Awards, but Ricki was enthusiastic about winning ‘Outstanding Talk Show Host’ nonetheless. After all, the victory comes in the aftermath of a major disappointment — the cancellation of The Ricki Lake Show after just one season. Still bummed about the show’s unfortunate demise, Ricki Lake took to Twitter to express a sentiment commonly shared by the ‘Friends of Ricki Lake’ community: “Always the underdog.  From Hairspray till now, I guess. I’ll take it.” She added that, in her opinion, the Emmy served as “just desserts.”

Many fans of Ricki Lake’s talk show feel that Twentieth Television made a huge mistake in canceling the daytime series, especially given the straightforward and honest matter with which it has tackled important, albeit controversial issues. But despite the Emmy win and an earlier nomination for a People’s Choice Award, The Ricki Lake Show was plagued throughout its run by low ratings, coming in a disappointing fourth out of five daytime talk shows that debuted during the 2012-2013 season. Twentieth’s executive producer of programming explained in February that, “While we are proud of the topics the program tackled, including childhood obesity, life after the military, divorce and addiction, we were simply not able to break through the crowded talk show marketplace.”

Do you think Ricki Lake deserved her Daytime Emmy? Are you disappointed to see her show come to a close? Sound off in the comments section below!

Yah, what an oxymoron! OK so the ratings weren’t the best, but what do you expect when a major market like NY is blacked out for 2 months?.

There just doesn’t seem to be enough time given anymore to get a good show like Ricki’s would have been off the ground.

It’s really too bad that things didn’t work out!

With better promotion, and some more time to get in the groove of things I think her show would have grown a bigger audience. They pulled the plug too quick! Many people are still discovering she’s back on TV.

in canada /maritimes her show was on the same time as ellen so i believe she should have been on a different time and that might have helped her since ellens been on for 10 strong years and has a big fan base..just my thought..i liked both..

I wasn’t digging her show and how horrible she was dressed and her hair looked just awful most of the time. Steve Harvey should have won.

The only negative about Ricki for me was how she always made everything about her. She always had to share her experience and always mentioned Hairspray. It was annoying. But the show wasn’t terrible. They need to cancel Bill Cunningham. Give ricki another chance.

I am glad for Ricki Lake getting this daytime Emmy. I got hooked on and enjoy her show very much. It is one of the highlights of my day.

Because of a new program advertised in her time slot, I finally called my local station only to find out she had been cancelled.

I am more than disappointed to hear that, but I wish her well in her future endeavors (and I hope she can get another show).

i’m pleased she won, but i agree Steve Harvey should have. however, i didn’t care for her the first time around and the second time was worse… no, i didn’t watch, but it kinda galled me that something better than that could’ve been on in that time slot

ps. i’m waiting with bated breath for Queen Latifah and Bethenny to be canceled also.

    i suck i know
