Paula Deen has once again been accused of being an all-out racist — but this time, it appears that the accusations are going to have some impact on her career. The Who Do You Think You Are alum recently bailed on a scheduled Today Show appearance. Did the no-show have anything to do with the latest controversy?
Is Paula Deen a racist? That’s been the hot question ever since the National Enquirer claimed to hold video footage of a deposition in the celeb confessed to making a number of offensive remarks. Of course, Paula’s rep denies these claims, having released a statement that reads as follows: “Contrary to media reports, Ms. Deen does not condone or find the use of racial epithets acceptable.”
But if Paula is trying to make a case for her supposed lack of racism, disappearing from the media probably isn’t the best idea. Sure, she’s probably being badgered by the press right now, but avoiding the Today Show is not going to help her negative public perception.
Today Show host Matt Lauer was as surprised by Paula Deen’s absence as his viewers, although, perhaps, none of us should be all that surprised. Upon learning of her failure to appear, Matt explained, “Paula Deen was scheduled to do an interview with us this morning, live in our studio, but we just found out she’s a no-show…She has not called us at all this morning.”
Paula Deen’s Twitter page has also been conspicuously quiet this week, with twice-daily tweets having been absent since June 18th, when Paula encouraged followers to sign up for her newsletter. Given the Twitter frenzy surrounding the current controversy, we’re not all that surprised at Paula’s decision to avoid the social networking site.
