Celine Dion certainly does not strike us as the stealing type, but recently, the Hell’s Kitchen guest star was accused of stealing someone else’s lyrics. The controversy, which began last month, seems like nothing but a big misunderstanding, but that didn’t stop one songwriter from slamming the superstar singer!
Australian singer-songwriter Daniel Merriweather is one person that is not a Celine Dion fan at the moment. In fact, Merriweather has been at the center of controversy lately, as he recently accused Dion of stealing his lyrics to “Water And A Flame,” but then went on to clarify his statement.
While he claims that he should not have accused Dion of stealing his song, he did go on to blast the singer, stating: “It turns out that she didn’t realize that ‘Water and a Flame’ was my song from my album ‘Love & War’, instead she thought it was an Adele song. She should’ve just done her homework before she decided to cover my song…name her album after it…and then publicly imply credit to the featured act on the song (Adele).”
However, Celine Dion’s camp claims that the whole debacle is nothing but a misunderstanding. “Celine certainly doesn’t claim in any way whatsoever that she wrote the song. While we can understand Daniel’s disappointment by not having his name mentioned during Katie Couric’s interview, it’s rather unfair to Celine to be on the receiving end of the many disparaging comments that have now become public,” a rep explained.
