Following a health scare that included a stroke last week, Randy Travis is awake once more. Unfortunately, the former American Idol guest star remains in critical condition and will require extensive treatment for his cardiomyopathy.
It’s been a rough few weeks for Randy Travis, who was forced to make a hospial visit due to heart problems…and then suffered a stroke following a brief period of stabilization. The good news is, an emergency surgery appars to have been successful in improving Randy’s condition.
So, what caused Randy Travis’ heart problems? According to cardiac surgeon Michael Mack, it was a combination of an acute viral ilness and more chronic issues. “He has what’s called idiopathic cardiomyopathy, which means he has scarring of his heart muscle that is causing his heart to be weak and not able to support his circulation without help of either medical devices or medication.” The cardiac surgeon adds that full recovery for Randy could take as long as several months — and that it will be anything but an easy process.
Right now, Randy is awake and alert, although his breathing is being assised by a ventilator. Medical staff at Baylor’s Heart Hospital in Dallas hope that they will be able to take him off the ventilator and have him breathing on his own in the near future. Another good sign comes in the form of recent brain scans, which show that the swelling in his brain has decreased greatly since last week.
We wish Randy Travis all the best as he begins what could be a long and difficult recovery process.
