Great news: Randy Travis is awake and stabilized! The American Idol guest star had been out for quite some time following last week’s stroke, but he’s at least doing a little better. Experts say his condition — cardiomyopathy — may be genetically linked. Will this knowledge help at all in the recovery process?
After Randy Travis wound up in the hospital with a severe case of cardiomyopathy, many following the story speculated whether his heart issues were related to recent use of drug or alcohol. After all, the country crooner does have a long and unfortunate history with harmful substances, having been slapped with a DUI last year in a highly-publicized incident.
Based on preliminary tests and medical evaluation, it does not look like Randy’s current health scare is the result of drug use. Michael Mack of the Baylor Heart Hospital (where Randy is receiving treatment) confirmed this by stating that there was no “appearance of either drugs or alcohol causing the heart condition.”
So, if it’s not illicit substances, what is responsible for Randy Travis’ cardiomyopathy? Apparently, there is some history of heart trouble in Randy’s family, and according to experts, genetics can play a huge role in the development of cardiomyopathy. After denying the presence of drugs and alcohol in this case, Dr. Michael Mack explained, “Mr. Travis does have a family history of cardiomyopathy and [his health scare] is more likely related to that.”
The recovery process is said to be a difficult one — and it could take as long as several months before Randy is back to normal. We hope that he is able to emerge from critical condition soon so he can get started on his recovery!
