Robin Roberts is widely regarded an inspirational figure in broadcast, which is why it should come as no surprise that the newscaster and Great Food Truck Race alum came away with the Arther Ashe Courage Award at last night’s ESPYs.
Anyone battling both breast cancer and myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) while still remaining one of the most talented broadcasters on the air deserves an award. As such, it makes perfect sense that Robin Roberts was chosen for the distinction of the Courage Award at the ESPYs. This award is granted each year to an individual possessing the very strength that made tennis player Arthur Ashe so notable as he battled HIV and AIDS.
Nearly as impressive as her sheer will to survive and thrive under the threat of two deadly illnesses was the amazing speech Robin Roberts gave upon accepting her award from LeBron James. Grateful to be designated as a positive influence Robin was eager to share the important lessons she had learned while suffering from breast cancer and MDS. “Through it all I learned that true strength isn’t when you face down life’s challenges on your own. It’s when you take them on by accepting the help, faith and love of others and knowing you are lucky to have those.”
The Twitterverse was particularly impressed with Robin’s speech. Fellow media sweetheart Erin Andrews shared her reaction by tweeting, “Wow…wonderful speech tonight @RobinRoberts…blown away yet again.” Maria Shriver also paid Robin a huge compliment with the following Twitter post: “Bravo to my friend @RobinRoberts…’When fear knocks let faith answer the door.’ Great advice! Congrats to you…”
We’d like to extend Robin Roberts a hearty congratulation for her big win at the ESPYs!
