Comedians on America’s Got Talent often try to push the boundaries in hopes of gaining attention from the judges. But on last night’s episode, one contestant may have gone a bit too far. At least, that’s what new judge Heidi Klum thinks.
The line between what’s acceptable and what’s offensive for a comedy act on a family show can be a fine one, as was made clear during a recent episode of America’s Got Talent. Comedian Kevin Downey Jr. (otherwise referred to as KDJ) specializes in treading that line, which means that, naturally, he’s going to step out of bounds on occasion. Such was the case when the comedian made a joke about a new cologne to which women just “can’t say no” after a single whiff. “It’s called chloroform,” KDJ explained to a chuckling audience.
Later, Heidi Klum expressed her discomfort surrounding a comedic act that, based on her interpretation, made light of rape. She told Kevin that his schtick just wasn’t up her alley, explaining that, while she understood the basic content, she was disturbed by the topic. Howard Stern then proceeded to ask whether anyone had used chloroform on Heidi, which, while eliciting a laugh from the audience, made the new judge appear even more uncomfortable.
Mel B also took issue with Kevin’s performance, although perhaps for differing reasons than her fellow judge. She told the comedian, “Half of you made me laugh and the other half…I was just a bit confused and a bit weirded out.” When KDJ explained that his goal is to weird audiences out, Mel responded by criticizing his material for not being “up to scratch.”
If you missed KDJ’s performance, we have the clip with the rape joke (and the judges’ responses) posted below. Check it out and then tell us whether you agree with Heidi Klum’s interpretation.
