Who knew that The Onion could be the authority on celebrity meltdowns? But it’s true — long before she cut off her hair or twerked excessively at the VMAs, former American Idol guest Miley Cyrus was the subject of a 2008 Onion featurette predicting her complete loss of entertainment value by 2013.
Writers and editors from The Onion can now officially say ‘I told you so!’ In 2008, the satirical publication released a Miley Cyrus inspired report complaining of the star’s prominence in pop culture. Dubbed Sources Warn Miley Cyrus Will Be Deplete By 2013, the video recounted the celeb’s rapid rise to fame, predicting that, thanks to circa-2008 overuse, she would be “drained dry of entertainment value by 2013.”
Self-described ‘Miley researcher’ Justin Canty (from the ‘Institute for Sustainable Cyrus Use’) joined the broadcast to provide additional insight on “the worst entertainment crisis humanity has ever faced.” He explained that, while young Miley was certainly a “potent” resource, her name and image were being used at an “unprecedented rate.” He highlighted all the TV shows, albums, clothing lines and concert series, predicting, “If we don’t act now, the down-to-earth Miley who likes text messaging with her friends and playing guitar in her bedroom will be wiped off the Earth forever.” He assumed that, within a few years, she’d be a “withered, desiccated husk incapable of causing anybody any amusement.”
Unfortunately, America did not heed warnings from the fictional Institute for Sustainable Cyrus Use and now, we must deal with the consequences. The 2013 version of Miley Cyrus subjects us to disturbing displays at the VMAs and Twitter pictures that feature way too much skin. Let’s just hope that the next Disney tween on the docket doesn’t suffer a similar fate.
