Once again, American Idol is on the hunt for a third judge. Keith Urban and Jennifer Lopez are already set to return for the show’s 13th season, but the final remaining position has been refused by one candidate or another. The latest prospective judge to duck out? Music producer Dr. Luke.
With a pop diva and a country crooner on the next judging panel for American Idol, the show really only needed a Randy Jackson replacement. But Idol producers won’t find one in Dr. Luke, the favored candidate who, according to E! Online, was recently still in talks with representatives for the reality competition. As of last week, multiple media outlets reported that the music producers was “close to signing.”
Unfortunately, a conflict of interest between Sony and Universal Music Group has forced Dr. Luke to back out on the deal. Idol expert M.J. Santilli tells ABC News that, in all likelihood, Sony is to blame for the snafu. “It appears that in the 11th hour, Sony may have stepped in.”
Other sources indicate that Dr. Luke’s absence from the American Idol judging panel may have less to do with Sony’s imposed limitation and more to do with the producer’s busy schedule. One insider tells the Hollywood Reporter that Dr. Luke is in the process of developing his own record label. “He really loves his artists and wants to build up the label.” And the producer also seems to have hinted at scheduling conflicts in the following recent tweet: “Unfortunately, I can’t be in two places at the same time…”
Do you think Dr. Luke would have been a good choice for American Idol? Any other ideas for a decent Randy Jackson replacement? Feel free to share them in the comments section below!
