For season 17, reality competition Dancing With The Stars is making a real effort to cater to that oh-so-desired group of viewers between the ages of 18 and 34. Casting is half the battle of attracting this younger demographic, which is why the show has brought on such familiar faces as Snooki, Brant Dougherty and Corbin Blue. Will this effort prove successful?
Although it’s one of the most-watched shows on television today, Dancing With The Stars is consistently plagued by low ratings among younger viewers. In order to attract this elusive 18-34 audience, the show’s executive producers have decided to shake things up a bit. The first big change involves following in the footsteps of fellow talent competition So You Think You Can Dance and condensing the twice-a-week format into a single episode covering both eliminations and performances. According to current pro dancer Peta Murgatroyd, this switch-up would lead to a “bigger and younger” audience.
But a once-a-week format will only take DWTS so far, which is why producers have also worked hard to attract a cast more current than some of the more washed-up groupings that have appeared in past seasons. And according to executive producer Conrad Green, they’ve been successful in that endeavor. He tells USA Today, “I feel like it’s one of the best (fields) we’ve had in years…We wanted to get people with compelling stories. We wanted to get people who will be able to put on a show for us.” The producer adds that season 17′s cast is sure to “appeal to every age of the family.”
