During the season finale last night of So You Think You Can Dance, creator and executive producer, Nigel Lythgoe announced that the dance show competition had been renewed for an 11th season by Fox. But was anyone watching?
Yes! Only learning the news “five minutes before we went live”, Nigel was thrilled to make the announcement during the show. The finale saw So You Think You Can Dance judges, Mary Murphy and Mr. Lythgoe, joined by American Idol Alum and pop star Paula Abdul, Rock of Ages director and noted choreographer Adam Shankman and dancer Twitch Boss.
Season 10 was down to four finalists: Aaron Turner, Jasmine Harper, DaShaunt “Fik-Shun” Stegall and Amy Yakima, who expressed her excitement before the finale by saying, “So honored to be given so many opportunities to live my dream!”
So which girl and guy were the big winners? Amy and Fik-Shun! Both dancers took home $125,000 and will appear on the cover of Dance Spirit magazine.
Despite their live broadcast being interrupted by President Obama’s speech on Syria last night, the 10th season has been averaging roughly 4 million viewers every week — last nights finale grabbed 4.2 million — putting it on par with Fox’s other reality hit Masterchef. The show is also up for 7 Emmys next weekend, including Best Reality-Competition Program and Cat Deeley for Outstanding Host. The renewal is also significant because it is the first unscripted renewal by Fox this season.
So what do the judges have to say about being brought back for season 11? Mary Murphy took to Twitter after the show and said, “”Can I get a wooohoooo season 11 coming your way. Keep your dancing shoes on!”
