Big Brother has certainly seen its share of racism this season, and even host Julie Chen was bothered by it. But Julie has been battling racism for years, and she even admitted recently that she had plastic surgery in the past to look less Asian! Details inside.
Julie Chen may not tolerate racism any longer, but there was a point in time, in her early career, when Chen was very much affected by people’s harsh words. In fact, Julie recently revealed that she underwent surgery on her eyes to make her look less Chinese, and more “relatable” to viewers. Yes, it’s sad, but true.
On a recent episode of The Talk, Chen revealed that when she was a news reporter in Ohio many years ago, she asked her supervisor if she could fill in for some of the news anchors when they were away. Unfortunately, instead of politely telling her no, he resorted to racism, telling her: “You will never be on this anchor desk, because you’re Chinese.”
Ouch! And if that was not bad enough, he also told Chen: ” I’ve noticed that when you’re on camera, when you’re interviewing someone, you look disinterested and bored because your eyes are so heavy, they are so small.” Sadly, it made Julie feel very insecure about herself, and she went ahead and had plastic surgery on her eyes to make them bigger and more expressive.
But today, Chen struggles with whether or not she made the right decision. Though she tries not to live with regrets, Julie feels as though she gave in to that man in a way. Whether it was the right decision or not, one thing Chen is sure of is that she is very proud to be Chinese.
