In what is sure to be one of the best crossovers on reality television, American Idol‘s season two winner, Ruben Studdard will be hitting the gym on the new season of The Biggest Loser, which is set to air next month. As he gears up to make his second reality show debut, Studdard recently dished on how he ended up on the show, and what the other contestants think of him!
It’s no surprise that Ruben Studdard is still struggling with his weight, but currently at 462 pounds, Studdard is the biggest he has been in his life, and his health is the reason he decided to sign on for the show. Speaking to Today, Studdard joked that he signed up: “Because I’m fat as hell!” But being severely overweight is no laughing matter, as Ruben went on to add: “No, really though, they called and asked me to be a part of the show and I knew it was time for me to change my life. I don’t think I’ve ever been this big.”
And of course, now that he is getting older, along with his added weight, Ruben is finding that he is suffering from more and more health issues. Studdard was recently diagnosed with high blood pressure, as well as borderline diabetes. Considering he is only 35-years-old, Studdard realized that now was the time to get help. So when he was approached to join the show, it was a no-brainer for Studdard, who also wanted to stomp out any rumors that his stint on The Biggest Loser has anything to do with fame. “I had no desire to be the next ‘Real Husband’ or anything like that! It had nothing to do with popularity or fame because I’ve got that. This was about me changing my life.”
Ruben also revealed that he did have to change around his schedule and concerts to be on the show, but he knows that in the end it will be worth it. Meanwhile, as for the other contestants on the show, many were surprised and star struck to see Studdard competing with them, but he assured us that those feeling quickly wore off once they all hit the gym!
We certainly hope that The Biggest Loser can help Studdard get healthy!
