Let’s face it — singers possess a definite advantage on America’s Got Talent. Not only are they better able to prepare material for new performances, they also continue to hold great appeal with the reality competition’s audience. And so, once again, we face the possibility of a singer coming away the victor for the eighth season of AGT. Will America once again go the predictable route, or can another novelty act follow season seven’s surprising victory?
The many musical acts to make the America’s Got Talent season eight finale include opera trio Forte, country crooner Jimmy Rose, and up-and-coming talent Cami Bradley. As such, there remains a fifty percent chance of a singer blowing away the competition and winning it all. Could one of the non-musical acts (which include dancer Kenichi Ebina, magician Collins Key and comedian Taylor Williamson) defeat the odds and follow 2012′s Olate Dogs with back-to-back novelty winners?
According to Howie Manel, fans should get ready for yet another singer to be crowned during this week’s finale. In a recent blog post for Parade, Howie explained why the odds are stacked against the non-musical performers: “When [Jimmy Rose] goes up against all the work and originality and honing that goes into an act like Kenichi, and then all the writing and thinking and quick-wittedness that goes into what Taylor Williamson presents, is that a fair contest?”
Based on past seasons, Howie is forced to conclude that his favorite finalists (Kenichi Ebina and Taylor Williamson) will be unable to snag a victory. “I think America will probably vote a singer in, just because it’s easier for them to connect to, and just because the people who are actually voting don’t always take into consideration the work that goes into the most inventive acts.”
Do you agree with Howie Mandel? Do the singers have the advantage going into the finale? Sound off in the comments section below!
