Who knew that when Sara Bareilles left The Sing Off to focus on her music, that the Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter’s first single would cause such an uproar?
Sara Bareilles, is used to being a critically acclaimed singer and songwriter, flying under the radar of Hollywood gossip and drama. Best known for her 2007 hit Love Song and for occupying a seat next to judges Shawn Stockman and Ben Folds on The Sing Off. Although she was only on the show for one season, she was looked up to by many of the contestants on the acapella singing competition, having performed with her own group, Awaken A Cappella, while attending UCLA.
But when superstar Katy Perry released her recent hit, Roar, many of Sara’s fans cried foul, claiming she stole the melody from the first single off of her album, Brave. All the song-stealing drama thrust Sara into the spotlight with much of the media wanting to know her take. Although she does not think that Katy Perry’s song stole anything from her song, Sara is loving that all of the hoopla has brought her song even more success than it already had.
Sara recently brushed off the accusation of stolen melodies and instead chose to focus on the positive. “I was stoked. I was like, ‘Great,’” Bareilles said in an interview Tuesday. “I was like, ‘You guys want to go get (mad) about something and buy my music, that’s great.’” She continued by saying, “I don’t feel like anything was taken from me artistically. I wasn’t the one having any problems with it,” she said. “I’ve known Katy a long time. We are friends and she and I spoke about it. I look at it as two female artists who are releasing a message of empowerment.”
Although she has no beef with Katy, Sara was a little miffed about how fans seemed to react to the accusations. “To be totally honest, I was sort of disappointed in how aggressive fans were being about it,” she said. “I don’t promote drama in my life and competition and stuff like that.”
Although NBC’s The Sing Off had been rumored to be cancelled the acapella singing competition returns this holiday season. Leave a comment below and let us know if you are planning to watch the new season.
