In August, we were happy to learn that Valerie Harper’s cancer was not nearly as bad as it had been just a few months earlier. But during last night’s Valerie’s Story documentary, we received further confirmation of the condition’s incurable nature. How does the Dancing With the Stars contestant remain positive in the face of such terrible odds?
During her recent debut on Dancing With The Stars, Valerie Harper brought the judges and audience to their feet with an inspiring performance. But behind that radiant smile was an understanding that this opportunity could be taken away at a moment’s notice.
Really, Valerie shouldn’t have been able to dance at all, based on the initial predictions that accompanied her cancer diagnosis. But, having fared far better than anyone could have predicted, Valerie figured there was no better opportunity to realize her lifelong dream of dancing. “When life asks you to dance, you dance.”
That’s not to say that Valerie Harper’s cancer is completely in the past. Talking to Meredith Vieira for her exclusive documentary, the actress explained, “It’s not curable. There’s no question. It has to be managed.” But although there’s no cure for her cancer, Valerie does her best to remain positive. She wants to be remembered as a talented entertainer who, above all, “was a lot of fun.”
