In a night full of shocking winners, The Voice took home the award for Best Reality Competition Program. The reality show singing competition beat-out the odds-on favorite The Amazing Race, taking home their first Emmy award and stirring up some controversy.
The Amazing Race has only lost one time since the inception of the Best Reality Competition Program category, in 2010, to Top Chef. Both shows were nominated for an Emmy this year as well, along with So You Think You Can Dance, Project Runway and Dancing With The Stars.
But when the winner was announced, it was Mark Burnett’s The Voice that came out on top. In a night full Emmy nominee rookies taking home the award at the end of the night, the win for The Voice seemed to just go with the flow.
When creator and producer Mark Burnett, faced the media backstage, he joked about his win,”Considering everyone comes up to me weekly and says ‘I love your show The Amazing Race,’ it feels pretty good to beat the show that I don’t produce and people think I do produce”.
But the night was not without controversy. Nigel Lythgoe, former American Idol producer and current producer of So You Think You Can Dance, immediately took to Twitter and wrote a rant that sounds a lot like sour grapes.” Shocked that The Voice won. Not so much for #SYTYCD but for #AmericanIdol. The first, the best and the program that changed the face of TV.” Seems odd since American Idol was not even nominated.
Reporters backstage also asked Burnett about the rivalry between the two hit reality singing competitions. “This is a very different show,” Burnett said. “This is a kind show. There’s no humiliation in The Voice. And people said these types of shows would never work without humiliation, but not true. America loves kindness and freshness and brilliant music. And so we never felt the comparison ourselves. We’re back tomorrow night. And we want to be No. 1 again. And this is great.”
