Say it ain’t so! After Monday’s paso doble on Dancing With the Stars, Bill Nye was sidelined due to an injury sustained while dancing. America’s favorite science guy is currently receiving medical treatment and may even require surgery to repair a partially torn ligament in his knee. If that happens, Nye’s reign as number one science geek on Dancing with the Stars may come to an end all too soon.
There have only been two performances so far for Season 17, but Nye has already cemented his spot as a fan favorite. His dancing certainly isn’t the best – it’s the worst, actually – but no one can deny that this is one scientist with charisma. After dancing the cha cha and the paso doble with pro partner Tyne Stecklein, Nye was the lowest scoring celebrity, but even the judges can’t help but love him. Bruno Tonioli, in typical Bruno fashion declared, “The ferocious and fearsome maestro in an exhilarating mix of genius and insanity. You definitely stepped up a gear, so much so that you nearly blew a gasket. … There was actually some paso doble there!” Carrie Ann Inaba had a similar reaction, saying, “You worked with what you’ve got. You made fun of yourself while you were dancing. It was a weird, bizarre masterpiece of insanity,” While “insanity” may not be the word a dancer wants to hear, it’s clear that this science guy has created something electric with his performances.
Unsurprisingly, YouTube videos of Bill Nye’s performances on Dancing with the Stars have gone viral, racking up more than three million views. If the scientist does need surgery, at least we can take solace in the fact that his mad dancing skills will live in infamy on the Internet.
