Martha Stewart: Bethenny Frankel Lost The Apprentice Spin-Off Because She Was A Pest

September 25, 2013 03:00 PM by Stephanie Gustafson

She may have established a successful line of alcoholic beverages, not to mention her very own talk show, but Real Housewives of New York City star Bethenny Frankel is still smarting from her 2005 defeat on Martha Stewart’s edition of The Apprentice. Why did Martha ultimately choose Dawna Stone over Bethenny?

We think of her as the ultimate Real Housewives personality, but before her time on the popular Bravo franchise, Bethenny Frankel was a lowly contestant on The Apprentice: Martha Stewart. On this edition of The Apprentice, Martha supervised as contestants attempted to sell wedding cakes, flower arrangements and other products of a decidedly domestic nature. Although she sustained several early project defeats, Bethenny eventually set herself apart through the creation of a short advertisement for a Song Airlines flight. She ultimately found herself the show’s runner-up, dismissed in favor of chief competitior Dawna Stone.

Success is the best form of revenge, and this cliche certainly rings true for Bethenny Frankel. Since her stint on The Apprentice: Martha Stewart, the reality star has gone on to establish quite the empire. This transformation was certainly evident the other day, when Bethenny invited Martha Stewart to her talk show.

It didn’t take long for Bethenny to open up old grudges by mentioning The Apprentice. Still annoyed by her crushing defeat, Bethenny asked Martha why she chose Dawna. Although her initial answer was evasive, Martha ultimately confessed, “Well, you weren’t so likable then…you were a pest and you were so out there in front of everybody.”

Bethenny may have been annoying on The Apprentice, but arguably, this grating personality proved the key to her success. Martha noted that the loss really doesn’t matter in the long run, as Bethenny is now a huge success.

Do you agree with Martha Stewart? Was Bethenny Frankel a pest in her early reality TV days? Or do you still take issue with her personality? Sound off in the comments section below!
