With hits such as Kitchen Nightmares and MasterChef continuing to draw massive audiences, it’s clear that Gordon Ramsay remains the premiere chef of reality television. But if he’s not careful, his significance in the culinary industry could fade away quickly. The latest devastation involves the removal of two Michelin stars from The London, Chef Ramsay’s flagship New York restaurant. What will this mean for his future as the go-to reality chef?
Who knew that Gordon Ramsay’s biggest kitchen nightmare could take place so close to home? The chef’s preeminent restaurant has been stripped of two Michelin stars, a huge blow as far as the culinary world is concerned.
According to Michelin guide director Michael Ellis, The London suffered from a number of issues that, ironically, Chef Ramsay has lambasted when encountered in alternative establishments. For example, critics complained of receiving “issues with consistency, and consistency is a huge thing for us.” The Michelin expert adds that “There’s been quite a bit of instability at the restaurant, quite frankly. I personally went there; we’ve had some very erratic meals.” Definitely not a good thing, as, given his usual emphasis on consistency, these complaints make the chef look like a big fat hypocrite.
That’s not to say that the decision to downgrade The London was an easy one. The restaurant has a long reputation for being one of New York’s finest culinary establishments. But restaurants — even Chef Ramsay’s restaurants — cannot rest on reputation alone. Ultimately, Michael Ellis feels that, although it was “difficult” to remove the two Michelin stars from The London, “We thought it was the right thing to do.”
Do you think The London deserved to lose its Michelin stars? Feel free to share your opinion in the comments section below!
