Teen Mom alum Amber Portwood made her escape from an Indiana prison this morning – or rather, she was officially released from lockup on account of good behavior and time served. Even though the former reality star was only 17 months into her 5-year sentence, a judge granted her early release, and Amber was photographed this morning as she left the facility sporting a “Breaking Free From Addiction” t-shirt – and a huge smile on her face.
The mom to 4-year old Leah was serving time at Rockville Correctional Facility in Indiana following her December 2011 arrest for drug possession and violating her probation. During her sentencing, Amber had the option of entering a drug treatment program or serving a 5-year sentence, and she opted for the latter, telling the judge that she would always be “a bad girl” and was unable to successfully complete rehab. The judge complied – obviously – and mandated five years in the big house for the former Teen Mom star.
While imprisoned, Amber took unspecified courses and kept her slate clean with good behavior, both of which helped her earn a release date well ahead of schedule. Her brother Shawn announced the good news (or bad news, depending how you look at it) back on Sept. 24 when he tweeted, “Congratulations sis. I am so happy that you are finally being released. You did everything you needed to do to get out long before 5 years.”
As for whether her good behavior will continued now that she’s out of prison, Shawn is convinced that Amber has changed her ways and is no longer a self-proclaimed bad girl. On Oct. 30, he tweeted, “Will be heading up to Indiana in a few days to see my sister. Can’t wait until she gets out and proves she is a changed woman.”
Yes, Shawn, we’re all waiting for proof too. So far all she’s proven is that prison food sucks, as evidenced in her first post-release statement to TMZ. When asked what she would do first now that she’s out, Amber replied, “Go get something good to eat.”
Why am I not surprised?
So what do you think about Amber Portwood’s early release from prison? Will she be able to keep on the straight and narrow, or will Leah’s mom be headed back to jail sooner rather than later? Tell us in the comments!
