Never one to shy away from controversy, Kanye West has managed once again to stir up a little drama with his latest fashion choice. The rapper and fiancé to Keeping Up With the Kardashians star Kim Kardashian was photographed earlier in the week proudly sporting a green coat with a controversial Confederate flag emblazoned on the right sleeve.
The flag, which symbolizes hatred and racism for many, seems an odd choice for anyone outside of a white supremacist faction, but for Yeezy, it offers just another perspective on slavery. In a radio interview, the “New Slaves” artist says, “React how you want. Any energy is good energy. The Confederate flag represented slavery in a way. That’s my abstract take on what I know about it, right?,” he said. “So I wrote the song ‘New Slaves.’ So I took the Confederate flag and made it my flag. It’s my flag now. Now what you gonna do?” He also added, “It’s colorless also. It’s super-hood and super white-boy-approved at the same time.” With the flag adorning several pieces of concert merchandise associated with his Yeezus tour, sales figures will be the real determining factor of just how much the general public approves of it.
Barney’s New York also became an unwitting player in the drama, as Kanye wore the coat to their Beverly Hills store on Monday. (This might be the first time that I applaud one of Kanye West’s acts of defiance.) The store is currently at the center of a controversy over allegations that the retailer racially profiles its customers, detaining and searching black customers who made expensive purchases. Kim Kardashian’s man recently spoke out against the store during one of his concerts, and the fact that he’s wearing his Confederate flag jacket to one of their stores is really quite hilarious. Go Yeezy! Now if only there was going to be footage of this on an upcoming episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians…
So what do you think? Is Kanye out of line for his latest fashion choice, or does he have every right to express himself with racially-charged symbols? Tell us in the comments!
