If there’s one thing we like about The Voice (you know, besides the amazing singers and CeeLo Green’s hilarious outfits), it’s the show’s ability to shake things up. And that’s exactly what happened during last night’s elimination episode, when viewers had the opportunity to rescue their favorites through the controversial new Instant Save. Which singer did Twitter users decide to spare?
Today’s reality shows are always eager to incorporate Twitter and Facebook into the very fabric of their existence. The Voice is certainly no exception, having earlier employed Christina Milian as its official social media correspondent. Christina’s since departed in hopes of relaunching her music career, but producers remain intent on keeping social networking front and center. Their latest gimmick? Letting the audience rescue contestants through the new Instant Save feature.
As host Carson Daly explained in a recent video announcement, Instant Save offers viewers a five-minute window during which they can attempt to save their favorite singers by tweeting their names incessantly. The contestant with the most Twitter mentions survives, while the other two must learn of their lack of social media popularity in the most unfortunate manner: with an immediate elimination from The Voice. Talk about an anxiety-inducing ordeal!
Last night, The Voice finally launched its Instant Save round, beginning by placing Jonny Gray, Kat Robichaud and Josh Logan in the danger zone. Carson Daly then gave the official go-ahead, launching a brief social media frenzy. Five minutes later, he announced that Kat Robichaud had received the most Twitter mentions, although he failed to back this up with any actual numbers. Too bad for the others, but we’re glad Kat gets another chance!
What did you think of The Voice’s Instant Save? Did the Twitterverse get it right? Sound off in the comments section below!
