Saturday night’s show in Philadelphia was the first stop for Kanye West as part of his on-again Yeezus tour, and New York and Boston are coming up soon in the concert schedule. Before hitting these next cities, however, the rapper stopped at nearby Harvard, where he gave a speech to students at the Graduate School of Design while baby mama and Keeping Up With the Kardashians star Kim Kardashian proudly looked on.
The lecture, which was part of the school’s DONDA series, touched on some of Yeezy’s most beloved topics – Kanye West, creativity, and more Kanye West. The rapper gave a lengthy speech about his personal experiences with design, as well as his beliefs about how it can change the world. “I really do believe that the world can be saved through design, and everything needs to actually be ‘architected.’” he told the group. “And this is the reason why even some of the first DONDA employees were architects that started designing T-shirts instead of buildings. But just to see the work actually be actualized,” he said. Um, what?
The speech then turned to his recent – and surprising – candid attitude with the media. “If I sit down and talk to Oprah for two hours, the conversation is about realization, self realization, and actually seeing your creativity happen in front of you,” he explained. “So the reason why I turn up so much in interviews is because I’ve tasted what it means to create and be able to impact, and affect in a positive way.” Again, what?
Next up was a small rant, presumably about The Man and how he’s standing in the way of paradise. “I believe that utopia is actually possible, but we’re led by the least noble, the least dignified, the least tasteful, the dumbest, and the most political. So in no way am I a politician–I’m usually at my best politically incorrect and very direct. I really appreciate you guys’ willingness to learn and hone your craft, and not be lazy about creation.”
Okay. I’m not trying to be super critical here, but c’mon, Yeez. These guys are enrolled at freaking Harvard University, and I still wonder if they had any idea what you were talking about. It sounded more like listening to the philosophical musings of the local drunk than a professional lecture at an Ivy League school.
Kim Kardashian obviously didn’t think so, however. “My baby speaking at the Harvard Graduate School of Design,” the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star captioned an Instagram photo showing her man speaking to the rapt crowd of students.
