Bill Engvall has been eliminated at last! Last night on Dancing With the Stars, the 56-year old comedian was finally sent packing after weeks of lackluster performances that left a lot of people thinking, “WTH?” While I’ve expressed a fair amount of exasperation that he remained in the competition this long, I will say that the guy has stayed classy throughout the season, and his likeable charm earned him a soft spot in the hearts of many.
Last night’s semi-finals showed off the skill and determination – along with the improvement – of all the remaining contenders. With the competition down to the talented Corbin Bleu, Amber Riley and Jack Osbourne, Bill Engvall had his work cut out for him. His Indiana Jones-inspired samba and his Viennese waltz with pro partner Emma Slater earned him a respectable 25 and 24 points, and we even got a glimpse of his impressive 25-pound weight loss when he ripped off his shirt. In spite of his decent scores and shirtless revelation, however, Bill assumed his usual position in the bottom spot. Jack and Cheryl, who were a little off their game last night, also found themselves on the chopping block.
It was Bill who found himself as the eliminated contender, however. When Tom Bergeron read the voting results and Bill learned his time on Dancing with the Stars had ended, he handled it with his usual positive attitude. “I feel wonderful. I feel proud,” he said afterward. “Like Emma said, when you get this close you’re not human if you’re not looking at the trophy, but we won. We won in so many ways.” Something else he’s proud of? His dramatic weight loss since joining the DWTS cast. He’s also got a plan to keep the extra pounds off. “I’m going to get an exercise bike now, so I let my knees take a rest,” he said. “The hardest part is going to be [that] I can’t eat whatever I want anymore now. I’ve got to go back to being a normal person. It’s been a truly once in a lifetime experience.”
So now we’ve got Corbin, Amber and Jack competing for the coveted mirror ball trophy. The competition continues on ABC tonight, where the finalists will spend one more evening on the dance floor before the champion is crowned!
