And the controversy surrounding Duck Dynasty’s Phil Robertson continues…. This time, however, A&E is under fire for allegedly knowing about Phil’s beliefs for years, and then acting all surprised when the reality star spoke honestly about his feelings during the GQ interview. Say what you will about Phil, but it sounds like A&E should be sharing a little of the blame here.
In case you’ve been living under a rock and didn’t know, the (formerly?) much-loved reality show and its patriarch came under fire earlier this week when GQ released some juicy tidbits from its recent interview with Phil Robertson, who has some very strong feelings about homosexuals. And by feelings, I mean absolute disgust and loathing. In the interview, the Duck Dynasty star confessed that he believes homosexuality to be a MAJOR sin, even going so far as to compare members of the LGBT community to terrorists and drunkards, among other things. Very uncool, but seriously, was anyone REALLY surprised by this?
Naturally, the internet exploded with people denouncing the show and calling for Phil’s head on a pole (rainbow colored, of course). A&E, recognizing the need for immediate damage control, released a statement that read: “We are extremely disappointed to have read Phil Robertson’s comments in GQ, which are based on his own personal beliefs and are not reflected in the series Duck Dynasty. His personal views in no way reflect those of A+E Networks, who have always been strong supporters and champions of the LGBT community. The network has placed Phil under hiatus from filming indefinitely.”
Now here’s where it gets a little shady. TMZ is reporting that A&E knew all about Phil’s beliefs, and well before he became a celebrity. In fact, in a video from 2010, Phil is seen giving a sermon at a Pennsylvania church that includes a lot of anti-gay material. The man clearly is not afraid to share his opinions, and there’s no way A&E didn’t know all this before they signed a contract with him.
No matter what your opinion is on Phil Robertson’s interview comments, there’s no denying that A&E’s swift punishment of their star is a little unfair, considering their prior knowledge of the dude’s beliefs. In fact, A&E seems totally cool with throwing their people under the bus at the first sign of trouble, and in my ever-humble opinion, that is downright sinful.
So what do you think? Should A&E share some of the blame here? Tell us in the comments!
