Phil Robertson has finally broken his silence regarding his controversial remarks about gay people in a recent interview with GQ, and guess what? He’s not backing down. Big surprise there, right? The bearded patriarch of Duck Dynasty created a sh*tstorm of controversy with his remarks and was subsequently suspended from the hit reality show, and it seems everyone everywhere has an opinion on the matter. Phil, however, has remained silent since the news broke…until now.
The Daily Mail is reporting that the reality star finally addressed the issue during a Bible study on Dec. 22, where Phil told the group, “I will not give or back off from my path.” He also added, “We are a bunch of rednecks from Louisiana, but I am not uneducated, I have a degree from Louisiana Tech. But this week I have been called an ignoramus.”
Indeed, many of the folks sounding off about the Duck Dynasty star’s comments have called into question his intelligence, open-mindedness and worldliness, among other things. Supporters, however, have maintained that Phil has always been open about his beliefs, and the swift reaction by A&E and others to his comments is unconstitutional.
During the Bible study, Phil also addressed his beliefs. “This week I have been asked, ‘Is this the first time you have brought up sin?’ I said, ‘Are you kidding? I have been traveling to and fro spreading this message.’ Then he said, ‘Well do you invite yourself to go and get your Bible and tell people what you are now sharing with us?’ I said, ‘No they are inviting me.’”
Phil also stated again, just as his did in the GQ interview, that he does not judge others and loves all of God’s children. “I love all men and women. I am a lover of humanity, not a hater. I will not give or back off from my path because you conquered death, Father, so we are not worried about all the repercussions,” he said before leading the group in prayer.
So it looks like neither side is backing down. A&E is standing by its suspension of Phil, so far, although thousands of people have signed a petition to withdraw the punishment. Meanwhile, the Robertson family is 100% Team Phil (duh) have called into question the future of the show, saying that they can’t see it going forward without their patriarch.
No doubt Phil Robertson’s new comments will fuel the debate even more, but what do you think? Tell us your opinion in the comments!
