Duck Dynasty star Phil Robertson broke his silence earlier this week regarding his controversial remarks about gays in a recent interview, and now someone else close to the reality star is speaking out – his minister. In the most unsurprising news of all time, the religious leader is backing Phil 100 percent, adding his voice to the thousands who have chimed in to show support for the Duck Commander founder.
People spoke with Mike Kellett, who is the minister at Phil’s church and has been his friend for more than 35 years. Mike says that, in spite of the controversy, Phil is “doing great” and “there’s great support and encouragement from folks at the church and churches all over the country.” He also added that support has been pouring in for Phil and his family, saying“We’ve received hundreds and hundreds, probably even thousands of emails and phone calls just voicing support or encouragement.”
In the conversation with People, Mike also touched on Phil’s beliefs, saying, “He had a good, strong faith and character before TV was ever a part of their lives, and he’ll have a good, strong faith and character far after the days of TV are over.” Like Phil, his minister and the church share a similar viewpoint on homosexuality, saying they don’t agree with the lifestyle, but they love all people and everyone is welcome in their congregation.
It’s been a week since Phil Robertson sounded off about his views on homosexuality, likening gay people to terrorists and drunkards, and he has been surrounded by a firestorm of controversy since then. The internet basically exploded with people from all over siding with or against Phil, and A&E was swift in their punishment. Phil was immediately suspended from the hit series in a bid to show support for the LGBT community; however, the Duck Dynasty star has maintained his stance and says he will not back down. The Robertson family has also indicated that the show can’t go on without Phil.So far, nothing between A&E and the Robertsons has been settled, but other networks have already expressed interest in picking up the hit reality show if A&E terminates their agreement.
So there’s the latest with the DD controversy. What do you think about the minister speaking out? Should the show go on, or do the Robertsons need to just stick with making duck calls from now on? Tell us in the comments!
