Harry Connick Jr. Steals The Show On American Idol Premiere

January 16, 2014 07:25 AM by Lisa Princ

Last night we saw the season 13 premiere of American Idol, and with another judging panel change, it was a refreshing change from the bickering of last season. As the hopefuls poured in to show off their talent, it was actually new judge, Harry Connick Jr. that stole the show!

American Idol returned last night, and while the show seemed to be lacking the usual amount of comical yet talentless auditions, there was a different feeling in the air from last season. There was no tension, no bickering, but instead, the judges brought a refreshing amount of fun to the show. And while there was definitely a good amount of talent, it was newbie judge, Harry Connick Jr. that stole the show.

With all eyes on Harry Connick Jr., he knew he needed to impress, and he definitely did just that. Connick Jr. brought a good mixture of humor and honest critique to the panel. In his first night, it’s already clear that we can see a bromance brewing between Connick Jr. and Keith Urban, which is going to make for a very fun season. Some of Harry’s comical moments included picking up one hopeful and cradling the star struck man like a newborn, to joking with Jennifer Lopez that he would “smack her on television.”

But the most refreshing part was that Connick Jr. was definitely not afraid to let those less talented hopefuls know that they were not ready – without being downright mean, but without sugar coating anything.  In fact, he’s already earned the nickname “Harsh Harry” from the other judges.  We don’t know about you, but we definitely can’t wait to see more of him tonight on Idol.

What did you think of Harry Connick Jr. last night on the season premiere of American Idol? Are you looking forward to seeing how he does as a judge? We know you have an opinion and we want to hear it. Comment below to share your thoughts with us!

We must have been watching different shows. I think Harry Connick Jr. came across as an arrogant jerk. I don’t object to his honesty, but he rudely interrupted the other judges. He’s pathetically desperate for attention and might be the reason I don’t watch the show this year.

I was so impressed with Harry Connick Jr. last night. He was able to change the whole image of what American Idol had become. I found him to be funny, musically intelligent and kind to the entrants. He was delightful with the other judges and made my whole evening a happy event. Can’t wait to watch Idol once again.

Harry has an ego but also has a pretty good sense of humor. To say he stole the premiere of Idol is a stretch but I did appreciate the accuracy of his input more than Jennifer and Keith and he had some very funny moments which is a pleasant change from past failed attempts at humor on the show. I even felt a bit sorry for him when several contestants didn’t even know who he was. Reality check Harry you’re getting old :D

I think Harry is definitely talented at what he does and he is a good singer. But something about him rubs me the wrong way…I’m not sure what it is.

Maybe it’s his questions to a couple of female contestants about their heritage. I’m of mixed race and I’ve heard questions like that all my life, so maybe I’m just sensitive. I don’t see why a person’s ethnic background matters…that only leads to stereotyping. What matters is how talented they are and if they can bring something new and exciting to American Idol.

Another issue is the way he “slut-shamed” a couple of the girls, one of them being Emily Piriz. I know he has 3 daughters of his own and maybe certain song choices make him uncomfortable…he is entitled to his opinion. But at the same time, he is not there to be anyone’s parent. Emily is now 18 which makes her an adult in the eyes of the law. If it were a younger girl singing that particular song, then I could understand the objection but Emily is now of age.

“Ooh La La” is a very sexy, suggestive song but it is far from dirty. I’m not sure what the problem is? I think his oldest daughter is close to Emily’s age but still…Emily is not his daughter. I hate to say this, but I wonder if he is somehow attracted to Emily and this is why he has such difficulty with her song choice? I mean no disrespect to Harry or his wife and children, but it is something to consider.

The truth is that kids grow up and young women will explore their awakening sexuality. This is not something to be ashamed of, nor should a grown man publicly shame an 18-year-old on television because she performs a rock tune about being into a guy. No foul language was used and no body parts were displayed, so what is the deal?

Don’t get me wrong, I like Harry otherwise…I just think he should have spoken to Emily off-camera about her song choice. And the questions about race/heritage are a big no-no.
