While Sunday night’s season 9 premiere of Keeping Up with the Kardashians focused on Bruce and Kris Jenner’s separation, last night’s episode of the two-part premiere turned viewers’ attention to the crumbling marriage of Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom – complete with incoherent phone calls.
During the hour-long episode, much was made of Khloe and Lamar’s marital troubles. The drama began when Lamar’s dad, Joe, made a very negative, very public statement about the Kardashians. In an effort to do some damage control, Lamar called up his wife and her sisters Kim and Kourtney to try and explain the situation, but his slurring and incoherent words ended up making things worse.
While Khloe tried to support and encourage her husband, telling him that her family is always there for him, Lamar’s downward spiral became increasingly obvious. At one point, Khloe reminded Lamar that he was due at her house the next day for a meeting with an attorney, and she warned him that if he didn’t show, the lawyer would drop him. “That’s the story of my life,” Lamar replied.
Khloe, Kim and Kourtney managed to stay calm during the chat with the basketballer, but the tension was definitely there. During the phone call, which was on speaker, younger sisters Kylie and Kendall Jenner looked confused and alarmed at their brother-in-law’s slurred speech – an obvious sign of the NBA player’s relapse into drugs.
Of course, the episode was filmed months ago, before we all knew exactly what was going on with Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom. If you’ve been legitimately keeping up with the Kardashians, however, you know that Lamar’s drug use – as evidenced by that sad phone call – was at the root of their relationship troubles, along with his womanizing. Ultimately, these became too much for Khloe to bear, and the reality star filed for divorce in December. As this season of Keeping Up with the Kardashians progresses, no doubt we’ll learn more about what went wrong in their marriage, as show producers have made it clear that the breakdown will be a major plot line.
So what did you think about part two of the premiere? Do you think Khloe handled Lamar’s incoherent phone call appropriately? Tell us in the comments!
