Yesterday’s episode of American Idol detailed all the drama of Group Night, a chaotic process through which judges Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick Jr. were forced to select the cream of the crop. Did any potential front runners emerge?
Group performances on American Idol are always interesting, as a promising solo singer can easily tank when forced to work alongside fellow contestants. Jennifer Lopez offered up a dire warning early on, informing the remaining singers, “Today, we’re going to cut half of you, at least.”
There were plenty of impressive performances, along with several flubs, but perhaps the most memorable of the night involved the Backstreet Cowboys, otherwise known as Dexter Roberts, Ben Briley and Casey Thrasher. The three singers chose I Want It That Way, a tune that clearly did not play to their strengths. And yet, somehow, they managed to pull it together. Keith Urban applauded the trio for making the gutsy decision to choose a song that had “nothing to do with what they do musically and making it work.”
Another interesting moment took place when Stephanie Hanvey received the ax. The poor gal was accompanied by an over-the-top stage mom, who expressed support for her daughter by shouting, “Awesome, baby! She’s a superstar all around. You’re one to watch out for.” She then went on to critique the rest of the group, which, unlike Stephanie, had made it through to the next round. Ah, what would the early stages of American Idol be without crazy parents?
