With her husky voice, MK Nobilette was a contender on American Idol from the very beginning, so having her as one of the Top 13 is really no surprise. Of course, there are those that would argue she made it through because of votes from fans that support her for being the first openly gay contestant on the show.
That could be so, but with her talent, it is evident she would have made it to the Top 13 even if she had been straight. Nobilette is one of the strongest among the girls and as a front-runner she could easily win the competition.
During Rush Week’s first night, Nobilette opted to not go for the higher notes and it seems that was a good decision on her part. Singing John Legend’s “All of Me” allowed her to show her depth, which is very emotional. After seeing all the supportive tweets and she seemingly connected well with the voters.
MK Nobilette’s talent was very evident especially when placed next to less mature singers like Bria Anai Johnson and Marialle Sellars. So, with stronger contestants like Kenzie Hall and Austin Wolfe out of the picture, Nobilette has an even better chance to win.
Clearly, there are other amazing singers and if anyone could beat Nobilette on the girls side it would be Jena Irene Asciutto. Although she got through the Top 13 as a wildcard from the judges, she’s obviously one of the most talented on the list. But, while she shows such promise as a potential star, she fits the mold of the more typical American Idol singer. Nobilette, on the other hand, has a more unique sound, and look, and that’s what could potentially propel her to the top.
Not only is she an awesome singer, but her humble demeanor and authenticity have also gained MK Nobilette a big fan base, as shown on Facebook, which is surely made up of more than just the LGBT community. She’s very easy to like and that will also help her to keep moving up.
When the judges brought Nobilette in for the Final Judgment into the Top 30, Jennifer Lopez told her she was very different. “We all fell in love with your voice and your style, but you’re not the typical American Idol,” the superstar judge said.
Nobilette nodded and said she had her own thoughts about that, which prompted Keith Urban to ask her what those thoughts were.
“I’m very obviously gay,” Nobilette deadpanned, “and there are always going to be people in America and everywhere else who are definitely going to hate. But I think in the last two years there has been a lot of things that have really changed that, and have really made it a positive thing.”
Called a “quiet storm” by Lopez, Nobilette resides in San Francisco and grew up with two moms, both of whom have been seen enthusiastically cheering her on in the audience.
