American Idol’s Top 8 Take On The 80s

April 10, 2014 06:24 AM by Stephanie Gustafson

Yesterday marked 80s night on American Idol. It proved an interesting experiment, in part, because none of the remaining contestants were even alive in the 80s! Although there were a few respectable performances, the main attraction of the evening was the goofy judging panel.

If there was one good thing about 80s night on American Idol, it was the fact that Facebook fans had the opportunity to see Keith Urban in a mullet, or, as Harry Connick Jr. put it, “sixty thousand dollars’ worth of hair extensions.” Sadly, Keith’s mullet was the high point of the episode, with most of the performances coming up short.

No matter the quality of the contestants’ performances, the song selection for the night was top notch. Jena Irene belted out the Joan Jett classic I Love Rock ‘n Roll, while Caleb Johnson took the unexpected route with Journey’s Faithfully. Other 80s songs featured on the show included The Police’s Every Breath You Take and Blondie’s Call Me.

The contestants did their best, but the most entertaining performance of the night featured the always lovable Keith Urban and Harry Connick Jr. The guys offered up an impromptu rendition of Like A Virgin, a song that, as longtime Idol fans may recall, another Keith used for his painful audition in the days of Simon Cowell. Twitter fans went nuts when Keith and Harry began their shtick, with many begging the judges to simply take over for the rest of the night.

The judges recently used up their last save, which means that somebody is definitely going home tonight. Who do you think it’ll be? Feel free to share your opinion in the comments section below!

I think they are all pretty good now, I hate to see anyone of them leave. As long as Keith Urban is on American Idol I won’t miss a second of it !!!

I just love the judges this year. I truly believe they are the perfect trio that really cares about each other. All three does a good job judging the contestants also.

It’s funny how the writer of this article states her OPINIONS as fact. It is all subjective and I doubt she is qualified to judge singing or you wouldn’t be writing for this nowhere website. In my OPINION the song selections are what caused the singers to not perform at their best. Most of the songs were just terrible!
