Mary Murphy absolutely adores being a judge on So You Think You Can Dance. This opportunity allows the ballroom babe to influence today’s rising stars with her well-crafted critiques. But on occasion, the judge’s job can be a bit upsetting — particularly when an amazing dancer is sent home and she can’t do anything about it.
Twitter followers sometimes forget that the purpose of So You Think You Can Dance is to find America’s favorite dancer, not America’s best dancer. By necessity, the most talented contestant will sometimes be shucked to the side in favor of somebody with whom viewers can better connect. This is especially true after the top ten dancers are revealed, for at that point, the judges can no longer decide who, among the danger zone contestants, gets to stay.
SheKnows caught up with Mary Murphy during the Teen Choice Awards, hoping to learn more about the downsides to SYTYCD’s elimination approach. Mary admitted that, for her, the worst part of the job was seeing amazing dancers go home too early. “It can frustrate us a little bit…the best dancer probably went home.” In spite of all this, Mary is grateful “that the judges do have a say for half the season.”
Mary understands the need for Facebook fans to have a say, which is why she has offered up a great suggestion for a future compromise: a wild card! This idea would make it possible for Mary, Nigel Lythgoe and the guest judge of the week to “bring somebody back later if we wanted to.”
A wild card would be a great safeguard against having the best dancers sent home early. Do you agree? Feel free to share your opinion in the comments section below!
