Simon Cowell’s American Inventor To Offer Million Dollar Prize

October 31, 2005 12:02:00 by Joe Blackmon

Inventors, tinkerers and entrepreneurs of America… Have you come up with the greatest new product since the Post-It? How about a floss-dispensing pen, or bubble gum with flavor that lasts forever? Well, Simon Cowell ("American Idol") wants your brainchild for his new show, "American Inventor," to air on ABC.

Brought to you by the producers of "American Idol" and Simon Cowell’s Syco Television, this new network primetime reality series, set to air on ABC, will undertake the biggest search ever for America’s best new invention. It’s open to people of all ages, including kids! Casting calls begin November 14 all across America (cities and dates listed below).

Says show creator/executive producer Cowell: "America has always been the mother of invention, from the airplane, rockets, plastic and the internet to flip-flops and soda. This is the ultimate American dream. We want this show to make someone a multi-millionaire."

With one million dollars at stake, "American Inventor" will celebrate the best in homespun American ingenuity. From mothers with a notion for a better baby stroller to experienced engineers with several patented inventions, "American Inventor" is open to anyone with a great idea. No invention is too big or small!

Prospective contestants can enter with a sketch, a prototype or even just a concept. The competition is open both to individuals and teams. The invention must be something that can be mass produced and sold to consumers in a retail outlet. Expert judges will narrow down the initial entries to a group of finalists, who will each be given $50,000 dollars to develop their product, refine it and take it to the next level. But in the end it will be up to America to call in and vote on which invention is worthy of the one million dollar prize.

For more information on applications, eligibility requirements and addresses for the eight casting calls, please go to www.AmericanInventor.tv or call (877) 255-8009. This competition is subject to applicable rules, which are subject to modification at any time in the producers’ discretion.

For interested inventors, here is the current schedule for casting calls in the eight selected cities (locations TBD):

Los Angeles, November 14
San Francisco, November 17
Denver, December 1
Chicago, December 4
New York, December 7
Washington, DC, December 11
Atlanta, December 14
Austin, December 17

"American Inventor" will be produced by Simon Cowell’s Syco Television LLC and FremantleMedia North America, Inc. The executive producers are Simon Cowell, Liz Bronstein, Siobhan Greene, Nigel Hall and Cecile Frot-Coutaz.

Simon Cowell To Start Another Failed Reality Show

Simon Cowell is starting to seem like an idiot to me, and I’ll tell you why. This guy has the best thing going; American Idol. Could there be a better gig? You sit there and critique people all…

This will be interesting to see how Simon is outside of AI. He happens to be my favorite judge because he’s so honest. I’m not saying I always agree with him, but he knows his stuff! :D Does anybody know if he will be a judge on this show? Or is he like Ryan Seacrest - an MC?

Simon Cowell has great courage to try a new show, that is what makes this country unique, you can shoot for the stars and hit one, why stop after that and go through life a one hit wonder….ask Edison or Johnny Cash where they would be if they stopped after their first sucess.

I’m trying out in Atl. and would love to know what the process is like from someone who has gone through it in one of the cities that have already had auditions. No, Simon is just a producer and said he’ll be behind the scenes. Thanks for any feedback!!!!

I think this show is going to be great. Mostly cause I have many inventions and ideas. I have a question for anyone out there that might know. I have seen on this site and a few others that there will be casting calls in Austin. On the ABC web site it doesn’t show Austin as one of the cities. Does anyone know if Austin is one of the Cities?

I,m a 31 year old maintenance mechanic.I have six really good ideas. I would like to talk to someone about getting on the show. They could all be good money makers. Actually the one would make Bill Gates look like a poor boy. Everybody would use it and people would probably like me dead for making it. Please help me with any info. Thanks Chappie

Ask your fellow inventors for help. They’re nice, welcome questions, and can certainly point you in the right direction for invention help.

You can also discuss the new show “American Inventor” soon to air on ABC. The site’s not affiliated abc, the show or the producers. It’s just an invention site that has a place for honest discussion about this show and others. have fun. join in. spread the word. and keep on inventing.

Simom Cowell says 95% of the inventors are insane. Does he not know that these are the second round picks-paid to fly and stay in CA for their second round presentations? Maybe they thought the guy with the changable car exteriors could be used in NASCAR to camaflage what car it actually was when pit stopping. Talk about pits-a pit bowl by a has been singing duo? No it wasn’t Milli Vinilli. I have a development idea for this invention. Have a middle post section with an ass on top where you can put your prune pits into a hole. Ha!

    Hi

I’m looking forward to the show, personally I’d love to see Simon present, its refreshing to he honesty and compassion in the judging.

As someone who sits through numerous product pitches, you realise that it is extremely important to not only know when to shoot a concept down, but provide the the people pitching, with the guidance they need to refine or - change - they’re view. out group knows what can be financed and sold; the inventor/entrepreneur knows what they can build and develop..

    It’ll be fun.!

The second show of American Inventor continued to have no real impacting invention, ex.: the washing machine, microwave, etc.. My opinion is that these type of inventions were left behind in the cities that held the auditions. I believe that the producers are not manufacturers and are not capable of anything except simple (cheap) that can be made in China. They did say the product needed to be able to be marketed within 3 months after the show.

I’ve been watching the show and wish that I had known about the casting calls before the show aired. I wonder if there will be another season? I guess the show has been very good to abc’s ratings.
If there is another season, I will definately participate!

The 3rd show of American Inventor also had no exceptional invention. Many companies have their own R&D. This is why an invention needs to be more than novel before a company will risk paying an inventor to undertake it. My belief is that the exceptional inventions were left behind. This is probably good for the inventors because a real manufacturer will be able to market their invention better. The producers would have to have a 3rd party do it and it would make for exceeding cost. Their lack of experience in the inventions field would also hinder its marketability. Unlike the winner of American Idol, people will not buy the product just because they voted for it and it became the winner.

  19. John Smith Says:
    April 8th, 2006 at 1:52 pm

The Last chance American Inventor Show had maybe one invention that may be worthy of marketing. I call it the Wizard of Oz spin off. A stuffed doll with the stuffing being: brain, heart, courage, honesty, or any other human virtue. It can’t believe thhat a similiar product is not on the market. The toy manufacturers are a hard sell, so the producers would probably have to have it made in China for resale in the U.S.. This is if they are willing to take the risk. If it were me I’d take the money gained from the show and run. If they intend on having another show in the future the latter would be a mistake.

  20. John Smith Says:
    April 10th, 2006 at 2:43 pm

I somewhat take back my above opinion. In stores where they have the Build-a-Bear the stuffing includes a heart to bring the bear to life. This heart virtue thus would infringe, but the other virtues would work. Maybe to repace the heart they could add say, KINDNESS.

The Judges took the inventors of 50 down to 12 on American Inventor. All of the inventions are mediocre, except (if it works) the baby car seat. Since no testing has been done or probably will ever be done you could not seiously vote for this inventon when it reaches the final four.

The In-brella had the most market potential of the 3 inventions on the last American Inventor show. Ed felt that the protoype failed twice, thus eliminated over the lesser market potential Catch. The prototype of the Catch was not however tested due to the fact that Eric said it would break. The testing for the In-brella was only the “B” model because there wasn’t time to finish the “A” (better) model. If there wasn’t time to develope the Un-brella how could there be time to develope the baby car seat? This invention is the only one left that could leave me with the impression that this show indeed found a significant invention-if it works?

Will there be casting calls soon for a new show, my invention is in the process of the protype stage and it will be ready for commerial showing very soon. I hope you post something soon so we can be ready to come. Will a casting call be in the Portland Oregon area or the Seatlle area?
This is the areas we would have to go to ….Hoping for something to be posted SOON>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

  26. john Smith Says:

Again the malfunctioning (but best) of the three inventions was sent packing. The exerciser broke and (top band section) leaving the user in pain with thumbs down. At least it was middles up. Ha! Jerry had time to correct this problem, unlike the malfunctioning un-brella. The hazardous bike was given one of the top 4 positions in which we viewers will vote on in a couple of weeks. Now we have the catch-which wasn’t even tested (because it would break) and the bike in which all 4 judges would not use; while the un-brella and the excerciser could have been used by all 4! Are these the greatest American Inventors?

Peter picked the word game which is semi-electronic (needs to be fully). They have individual hand held electronic learners. The latter is better because a group of kids together in todays society to learn will only occur in school.

Doug picked the Million dollar winner! This invention: “ANECIA” is so far advanced over the others that it’s like the Detroit Pistons competing over High school basketball teams. Who could vote for anything less, thus the projected winner Janu and his anti-inertia machine!

I’am I dying to get this opportunity to accomplish what the show American inventors set out to do. The invention I have will be in homes around the world and I came across this project because I needed to complete my home. The entry level judges will be able to see this invention to be a finalist in the show. Thank you in advance for the opportunity.

There was only two inventions in the whole American Inventor telivised group that would have any chance to be marketed. These two are 1.) Anecia and 2.) Pure Flush. Since the Pure Flush was grouped with the Anecia it was eliminated from the final four, thus I voted for the “ANECIA’.

  30. John Smith Says:

American inventor winner-”ANECIA”. If you want a chance at entering next season:
1.) have a large enough to see invention for T.V..
2.) have one use- so 2 min. can describe it well and easier for the judges to understand.
3.)You can also have something silly-if you want to move to the next round.
4.) Create a sob story for yourself.
5.) Tell the judges that you’ve put no less than $50,000 into your invention!
6.) have at least a provisional patent before the 1rst audition.
7.) relate to the judges ego-like Janusz did doug. Be a sales person!
    8.) Good Luck!

Kelly Clarkson should take a que and remember that she could at this time have been barefoot and pregnant with no pot to pee in if not for American Idol!
