Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader Coming To Fox

Class is in session for a six-episode run of ARE YOU SMARTER THAN A 5th
GRADER?, a new quiz show from Mark Burnett. The series commences with
preview episodes over three consecutive nights following AMERICAN IDOL.
Special half-hour episodes will air Tuesday, Feb. 27 (9:30-10:00 PM
ET/PT) and Wednesday, Feb. 28 (9:30-10:00 PM ET/PT), and full one-hour
episodes will air after AMERICAN IDOL on Thursdays, March 1 and 8
(9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT).  The show will lead off the night on Thursdays,
March 15 and 22 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX.

Unlike the typical game show that measures intelligence, ARE YOU SMARTER THAN A 5th GRADER? tests adults’ lack of knowledge - as revealed by how much they’ve forgotten since elementary school. Grownups will again find themselves in a classroom setting, revisiting their youth, as they tackle subjects they’ve already been taught, ranging from art to geography and math to social studies. For example, test questions, which are taken from actual textbooks from 1st grade through 5th grade, could be similar to, and as simple as, the following:

â⬠   In what state is Mount Rushmore located?

â⬠   What are the colors of a rainbow?

â⬠   What are the names of the five Great Lakes?

Have you forgotten? Are you stuck? Well, in ARE YOU SMARTER THAN A 5th GRADER?, the players are not alone. There is a way for contestants to “cheat” in this classroom. The adults will have the opportunity to get some help from real grade-schoolers, who will offer what they think is the correct a-n-s-w-e-r.

    In the sentence on 15 March 20067, in which a female contestant was asked how many adjectives were included included in a sentence flashed on a screen, both she and the student answered: three. There were actually four. The word “the” is considered an adjective. The contestant moved ahead and is still on the program. Both she, however, and the student goofed.

    In a sentence flashed on a screen during the 15 March 2007 show and about which a female contestant was asked to identify how many adjectives were within the sentence used, both she and the student stated: three. Since, however, “the,” one of the words in the sentence, is considered an adjective, both the contestant and the student were in error. There were four adjectives in the test statement.

    FOX periodically conducts contestant auditions for game shows and reality shows. Audition sites and dates are announced on the FOX Home page. Here’s the link:

    At the moment there are no auditions scheduled for Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader, although there are other shows currently holding auditions. It is good to check this link every few days, as the information changes and notification of auditions for Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader will appear there when the time comes.

     My boss would love to be a contestant! He is the Research Director of the AVKO Foundation, a non-profit organization that specializes in teaching dyslexics how to read, write, spell and type. Don McCabe’s book “To Teach a Dyslexic”, is an autobiography! What a challenge it would be!

     Of course, he would donate any monies won to the AVKO Foundation to continue to help children and adults with learning problems in reading and spelling. Please contact me regarding an application for participating.

     The show is a winner and Jeff Foxworthy has found his stride.

     I would like to be on the show and offer 1/2 of any and all winnings directly to The United States Armed Forces veterans hospital.

     I have heard of the deplorable conditions and would like to make a difference when it comes to showing some love for our fallen comrades. They may be down, but they are not out and they need training to re-enter life and the workforce.
