So You Think You Can Dance Winner Is Sabra Johnson

August 16, 2007 09:06:18 by Joe Blackmon

Sabrajohnson_winsOn the So You Think You Can Dance finale results show, Cat Deeley
revealed that a record-breaking sixteen million votes had been cast for
the top four.  The top twenty finalists and all the season’s judges
returned to take part in the finale.  Also, Adam Shankman and Paula
Abdul were in the audience.

Judge Nigel Lythgoe tied up a loose end involving Claire Callaway.  Claire had twisted her ankle during last season’s Vegas auditions, and Lythgoe had invited her to return this year in the Vegas round.  Lythgoe revealed that the reason that she had not returned was that she was having a baby, and the camera cut to a shot of Claire and her baby in the audience.

After a recap of the season, the top twenty performed a group dance of “The Loiness Hunt” from The Lion King.  Lauren Gottlieb and Pasha Kovalev danced to “Fuego” by Pitbull.  Brandon Norris clogged to “The Way I Are” by Timbaland featuring Keri Hilson & D.O.E.

Jaimie Goodwin and Hok Konishi danced to “The Chairman’s Waltz” from the Memoirs Of A Geisha soundtrack.  Sabra Johnson and Dominic Sandoval danced to “Make It Work” by Ne-Yo.  Neil Haskell and Sara Von Gillern danced to “Knock On Wood” by Rachel Stevens.  Bryan Gaynor danced to “Ain’t No Other Man” by Christina Aguilera.  The top eight finalists danced to “Get Up” by Ciara.

Lacey Schwimmer and Danny Tidwell danced to “Hip Hip Chin Chin” by Club Des Belugas.  After they finished dancing, Cat Deeley revealed that Lacey Schwimmer had been eliminated from the competition.  Nicole Scherzinger sang her single “Whatever You Like.”

Sara Von Gillern and Pasha Kovalev danced to “Rockafeller Skank” by Fatboy Slim.  Anya Garnis and Danny Tidwell danced to “It Had To Be You” by Brian Evans.  Sara Von Gillern and Jesus Solorio danced to “Cabaret Hoover” from The Triplets Of Belleville soundtrack.

Sabra Johson and Neil Haskell danced to “Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)” by the Eurythmics.  After they finished dancing, Cat Deeley revealed that Neil Haskell had been eliminated from the competition.

The top eight finalists danced to “The Moment I Said It” by Imogen Heap.  Computer animated versions of Nigel Lytghoe and Cat Deeley danced together.  Ryan Cabrera sang “I Will Remember You.”  Lacey Schwimmer and Neil Haskell danced to “Time” by Billy Porter.

The final two of Sabra Johnson and Danny Tidwell joined Cat Deeley on center stage.  Cat Deeley revealed that the winner of So You Think You Can Dance was Sabra Johnson.  In addition to the title of America’s favorite dancer, Sabra Johnson also won a quarter of a million dollars.

ok so what will happen with sabra now? what will she get out of winning this? my guess is that she will be forgotten within a week and never heard of again (except among dance people). btw it was nice seing paula abdul, havent seen her on tv for at least.. a week. i think she needs to choreograph for this show next year

I tried voting for the full two hours for Danny after the show Wed. At first every few seconds and then every minute or so. Never stopped trying… and never got anything but a busy signal.
I think all the dancers were worthy of the win… I just prefered Danny but could not get through to vote for him. Then, after two hours, voting ended… what I do not understand is how one can seriously believe the results!!!!!

I give congratulations to Sabre, she had passion and the fact she had only been dancing for 4 years is commendable. She was truly 2nd best. Perhaps she was the best for next year, BUT DANNY WAS UNDENIABLE THE BEST THIS YEAR!!!!!! To that fact I am not happy with the show for their attack on Danny from the beginning, starting with Shane whose talent as a choreographer was proven to be lacking (that was the opinion of all 20 people I watched with, we don’t think Shane knows much about hip hop based on the dances he choreographed), and all the other judges who mistook Danny’s confidence for arrogance, there is a huge difference between the two and a true talented performer is always supposed to be confident. Again I am happy for Sabre, but not enough to tune in to the show next season, I don’t have time for the frustration of seeing such talent not respected. However, through American Idol, we have all seen that regardless of the winners chosen (whether fair or not) the true winner always flourishes and takes the spotlight.

Congratulations Sabra! You were the ultimate professional even with only 4 years of dance school. That proves that you are a natural and that you were born to be a WINNER! Thank you for being on the show. I loved every minute watching you. You were absolutely fantastic. I loved Danny too, I voted over 200 times for the both of you. So I know that the votes were counted properly. You both ROCKED!

I have one tip to Sabra, spend the quarter mil on dance lessons… your foot work is horrid… She’s cute, and she’s ok, but she’s not great, the other three were great, I was highly disappointed to see her in the top 4 and even more for her to win… if you wanted a girl to win it should have been Lacey…what did people see in her, she just wasn’t my cup of tea… she has no depth to her dancing

Come guys Danny talent shine above and beyound everyone else on this season as well as the 1st 2 season. Danny was awsum. but i knew sabra would win after it got down to the final 4. Even with Nigel saying I would perfer a girl to win this season said it all. Just like american idol i think the voiting is fixed. Take Taylor for instance OMG he was awful and where is he now. under a rock and jordon ok she was cute and good sign. But Melinda was off da chain. So GO Danny i’m sure you’ll be seen more often then any other on the show this season

lol at FoB.. i cant even say how stupid that comment was.. but I guess because you and 20 other people think Shane is lacking, he must be! and it wasnt that his talent wasnt respected, not one instance went by that came about. even if it was confidence, there was way too much of it. not one of the other 59 dancers in the past had that attitude.

I am pleased to see that a qualified bi-racial person or minority took the title and that would encourage other people of color to try out and know they have a real chance at winning! However, Danny, yes Danny, and only Danny, and of course Danny was the BEST DANCER, way above the others…I guess I can live with Sabre being the Favorite Dancer, but there is no question that Danny, the 1st Runner-up like his brother last year Travis, who was also the 1st runner up was without question the BEST DANCER in “Do You Think You Can Dance” history, he will be the Ben Vereen of his generation. How unforunate that Danny & Sabre only danced together only once during this competition.

  25. Tara Says:

I really wanted Danny to win…I like Sabra too, but I thought Danny had much more talent. I never was a big fan of Lacey even though Benji was my favorite last year. Neil was just cute, so I think that’s the only reason he was in the top 4.

HOW ABOUT ALL THE MANY YEARS THAT DANNY AND LACEY HAD PUT IN?? FOR NOTHING???TELL SABRA TO GET HER TEETH FIXED, HAVE A NOSE JOB, GET SOME BREAST IMPLANTS AND A NEW HAIRDO AND THEN, MAYBE, THEN SHE WILL HAVE SOME MONEY LEFT OVER FOR A DANCE LESSON FROM DANNY OR LACEY….PAY THEM TO TEACH HER HOW TO DO IT!!!!!!I AM SHOCKED AND DISAPPOINTED WITH THE AMERICAN PUBLIC FOR MAKING A BIG BAD DECISION….DID THEY FEEL SORRY FOR HER BECAUSE SHE ONLY HAS HAD 4 YEARS OF TRAINING???/COME ON!!!!!

Keep in mind, people, that they call it America’s FAVORITE dancer, not best… because, of course, if it was America’s best dancer, Danny definitely would have won.

With that said, I’m happy for Sabra. At this point I had NO idea who was going to win, so I would’ve been happy for anyone. =)

you guys are idiots, you vote for your favourite, not whose the best, they’re all unique, ask danny to do head spins then call him best. All of them are extremely talent. I know most of you are contemporary dancers and you guys have the biggest ego and discriminating personalitys. Unlike these other dancers that are open minded to other dance styles. Sabra show’d love on stage and truly deserved it.

I’m happy for Sabra! She has the fire, passion, talent and personality - and only 4 years of training, wow!
I think people need to keep in mind that this is America’s FAVORITE dancer, not best dancer - therefore, other factors like personality, stage presence, your ability to touch the audiences’ hearts through dancing, etc are also taken into account.
Danny is no doubt the best technical dance and I know that he will have such a bright future.
    Congrads Sabra!

No way was Sabre the best. No friggin way. You all know it, I know it, the judges know it, the world knows it. Lacey and Danny were head and shoulders above the rest. Their strength, consistency, pure wild talent, fire and ‘it’ quality could not, can not, will not be denied. That’s it. That’s all. Lacey or Danny should have won.

  38. LeeLee Says:

There will always be people who cry foul when their favorite doesn’t win but I think Sabra won America over and I’m thrilled she won–she deserves it. There’s so many things other than technique that come into play to give access to non-dancers watching the show. Versatility, personality, star-quality, humility, passion, it all plays a role in a competition like this and rightfully so. When you combine those things, I think Sabra legitimately comes out on top. The top 4 were excellent but Lacey putting a little too much out there too early and Neil and Danny not putting enough out there early enough did them in with the voting. But they’re all winners, all of their talents were acknowledged and praised and I take heart in that no matter what the fans say, those dancers were all happy for each other. I can’t imagine that any of them feel robbed given how much they all liked and respected each other.

I really feel that Nygel’s comment about picking a girl was the deciding factor. I tried the two hours to vote for Danny and never got through, so I now wonder how many votes he didn’t get because of this problem. He was absolutely great, and I hope to see him dance again. However, congratulations to Sabra..

  41. Jayne Says:

That person (a guy) that said they wanted a “Black” female to win - please - stop being a racist. The show is about the “Favorite” dancer and obviously she danced well enough and people liked her. Sabra appreciates the win - you can tell by how she was surprised to do so. Danny is an excellent dancer, the better dancer by far and he is better than flirtatious Lacey. Danny should have won for being so technically correct, but he wasn’t the favorite, but he was the second favorite. Danny will work and become very successful in his career. Unfortunately, these people don’t get a “label” but perhaps they will get a contract to dance some where, we may never see them unless they end up in a movie or on a TV show. With Sabra waiting on tables to pay for classes, sleeping on coaches, she really needed the money. So blessings to her, as well as the other top ten - they will all get jobs for sure. Great Show better than last year. Twice as good as American Idol.

Reading a lot of post and forums, it makes me laugh that people criticize Sabra and praise Danny as the better dancer. In reality Sabra was capable of performing any type of genre with skill and precision. Danny is an incredible dancer, but when he attempted certain genres (like Hip Hop), he did not come up to the same level of performance. His forte can easily be seen in Ballet and Modern, But Sabra always came out with flair regardless of dance-style. Good for you Sabra, You were my Number one and you proved me right!!!!

Loved the end results. Loved the final two, and final four. Loved the idea that Sarah and Pashya could hold their own, in terms of woning some of the incredibly entertaining performances for season 3. Loved the inclusion of Hok, Jesus, Anya and Shauna into the tour (what happened to Cedric?). Would love to see Anya and Pashya dance together, cos those guys, considering their formal backgrounds in ballroom/Latin styles, could really bring up the heat in other styles. This was really well judged and enjoyed compared to other talent contests. American Idol, needs to develop a protection scheme like this show, that ensures contestants with the best potential, remain in the competition. Nigel and the judges and I am sure the choreographers, keep the talents high, always loved the constructive criticism, that kept contestants yearing for more success.

  48. Belle Book Says:
    August 17th, 2007 at 11:44 am

Although I have to agree that Danny is technically better than Sabra, the show’s looking for America’s FAVORITE dancer, not America’s BEST dancer. I think that Sabra (my favorite) had the right kind of personality to win the audience over, and she was a little more versatile than Danny was. Danny’s reserved nature and problems with genres such as hip-hop did him in. And even if Nigel thought America should choose a female winner, if Sabra didn’t have the right kind of personality and sufficient talent for America, she’d have lost.

So don’t go around claiming the results were fixed. Sabra won fair and square.

And now for my final thoughts:

    CONGRATULATIONS, SABRA!

my question is if our votes really count why don’t they actually tell us what they are instead of giving us a rounded off number of the total votes? I mean couldn’t they even say rounded off numbers for each contestant? I think this show and American Idol are both somewhat fixed…..and the fact that Nigel said a girl should win this year….well that altered everything anyway. TEAM DANNY!

  51. Tooty Says:
    August 17th, 2007 at 1:58 pm

If Lacey won, alot of people would be claim the show is fixed. If Neil won, other people would claim th show is fixed. If Danny won…. you know the rest.

Sabra won because the majority of American viewers liked her the best. I tried voting the whole season, but as you guys said, the lines were busy. That’s just the way it goes.

I understand that your favorite dancer didn’t win, but does it hurt to have some respect, and not be so bitter?? Alot of comments sneakishly insinuating that it was Affirmative Action is pretty lame. She was an excellent dancer. Maybe not as good Danny, but she held her own, and she danced the way she was suppose to. She’s not a guy, so of course, she can’t do triple tour jetes. However, it was not required… so, please get over it.

Congrats Sabra. I’m proud of you, as well as the millions who voted for you. You deserve the money and recognition. Keep pushing… and don’t let bitter people get you down. As you see, this is the way of the world… and some things never change.

Congrats to you Sabra!!! For all of you who are so foul at the mouth about Sabra, first learn how to spell and complete your sentences before you start bashing people. I feel that the top 4 were very excellent dancers. However like Nigel said, it’s America’s favorite and Sabra was my favorite, therefore, she had many of my votes. I’m glad she won. Also, come off that racial stuff, just because your favorite didn’t win, doesn’t give you the right to say she won because they wanted a African American Female to win. how do you know what her race is exactly. Not to mention, you all are wrong for thinking, because she is a black Woman she can’t dance. She deserved it! Sabra had what America was looking for. So come off it. Again, Congrats to you Sabra; you deserve the victory.

Ummm…why do people have to be so harsh when someone wins? It always goes racial or conspiracy. Makes no sense.
Just be happy for the winner and promote your favorite when you can in the future.
Sabra was the “natural” talent and personality. Of course they all had “something” or they would not have been on the show.
It just makes me sick that people in this world always have to resort to bashing as a form of retaliation for thier favorite not winning. They all won in a sense…millions of people now know ALL of thier names now and they ALL had the same opportunity to win.
Sabra, you did an AWESOME job. A true inspiration to people just starting out.
All of this Seasons contestants did wonderful.
Its not easy to go from an everyday person to an Icon on TV in a few months, alot of pressure and ALOT of work!

It’s a shame how ignorant and racist people can be. There’s nothing wrong with Sabra’s hair. You’re perpetuating racial stereotypes by saying so.

Sabra is a dancing chameleon able to adapt to any style they threw at her. The judges said this week after week.

With the exposure they got on the show, Danny, Pascha, Sara, Dominic, Travis, Lacey, Neil–ALL OF THEM will have fine careers! The question is, what will you lowlives be doing. . .

CONGRATULATIONS SABRE!! I’m happy and excited for you! I hope to see you doing great things in the future. I personally thought Pasha would go to the final 4, but oh well. Good Luck to PASHA and DANNY in anything they do…as a matter of fact GOOD LUCK TO ALL OF THE DANCERS out there who love doing what they do. Now for all of you haters….comments about the nose, hair, and teeth…STOP IT!! Oh my….why are you so jealous…stop hating and work on YOU. This is a beautiful girl, IN AND OUT! It’s so hard for you to look past the outer layer and find out what’s inside of a person. Your life must be so shallow to bash this young lady, SABRE, and whomever else I’m sure you bash from day to day. Start appreciating the gifts that others have and then others will start to appreciate you. Please don’t pass your style of judgement over to our youth. America is full of beautiful people, no matter who you are, you are beautiful. Love yourself and others. May God Bless all of the dancers who entertained us this season!! Good Luck and God Speed!

Whatever the result, the best dancers were all in the top ten. They were all seen by people such as the incredible Mia Michaels, and that counts for a lot. I believe that Ms Michaels was a fan of Danny, so he has a very important contact now. He really is an accomplished dancer.

These youngsters all got a chance to strut their stuff in front of those scouting for new talent. I doubt that any of them will fade in obscurity now.

I think we should be proud of every one of them. It takes a lot of guts to get out there and do what every single one of them did. I say kudos to the whole group.

Of course the voting is fixed, you would be stupid to think its not. Why would the producers of the show put through who the public think. The public have no idea how to produce a tv series, or who to put through to make the show more entertaining, that has millions of viewers watching every night. Yes it makes you feel good that your voting but its just more money for the company, thats all it is. Thats why sometimes they say it is really close so you vote more. It wouldn’t make a difference if one person got more votes or not, they judge who to put through on ratings whether that be by entertainment value or controversy value, it obviously worked becasue how many people are kicking up a stink about Sabre being the winner and not Danny! The show is not governed by who gets the most votes but by ratings! But the public is simple minded and companies will continue to scam the unsaavy audiences of America for as many dollars as they can get. cmon people wake up! you people are just as smart as they are! don’t waste your money on a vote that will never count more than you giving the company money for no reason. Don’t ever vote for anything that costs money, its just dumb and your losing your money! To hear some people voting over 200 times! WTF!!!! Think about the big picture from the producers point of view, it looks something like this $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. Get the picture!

First of all, this is reality tv. There is no way in hell everything is going to be perfect and no, the public may not get the results they want. That’s called life. Congrats to Sabra, she deserved to win…and if she didn’t, she would not have. Plain and simple. I think she had a fair chance and she utilized it better than some of the other contestants who have been dancing for years. Danny, Lacey, Pasha, Anya were awesome to me and I was rooting for them primarily. But at the end of the show, season, day, we go back to living our lives, whether they were inspired by a tv show or not. These are not life and death decisions for us, it’s tv. These dancers were on national television and now they have a whole new range of opportunities open to them. So, the real question is not whether the contest was fixed or whether the right person won…it is, what did you learn and can you apply it to an area of your life for self-improvement. Quit hatin on a person who reached for their dreams and made it happen.

CONGRATS TO ALL THE DANCERS & ESPECIALLY TO SABRA, DANNY, LACEY, PASHA, AND ANYA!!

It has NOTHING to doing with race, it had NOTHING to do with RATINGS, it had NOTHING to do with the fact that the next winner should be a GIRL

It had EVERYTHING to do with that little girl getting her butt out there and doing everything they asked her to do, and THEN SOME. It’s called loyalty to what you do. I’m great with making lodge type crafts…. so I put my heart and sould into it. My point is, she has more heart and soul in her teeny tiny little body than most people these days - who want to see it happen for them NOW, but don’t want to put forth the effort. I’m proud of you SABRA… I watched you through the whole entire thing! CONGRATULATIONSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!! XOXOXOXOXOXO :-)

DO NOT TAKE AWAY HER GLORY OF GETTING THE CHAMPIONSHIP - WITH ALL YOUR PETTY “its because she’s black” “its because shes a girl”. No, it’s BECAUS€E SHE KNEW WHAT SHE WAS DOING. SHE KNEW WHAT SHE WANTED, AND SHE WENT AND GOT IT. My point is, she has more heart and soul in her teeny tiny little body than most people these days - Those people who want to see it happen for themselve NOW, but don’t even try because as long as they don’t have to do the work to get to reap the rewards. It won’t get done. I’m proud of you SABRA… I watched you through the whole entire thing! CONGRATULATIONSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!! XOXOXOXOXOXO :-)

to grandma of 10, this show is in no way better than dol. It’s kinda dumb because the best people never win. Sabre wasn’t bad, but she shouldn’t have won. I do think they got the top 10 right, but not much after that. This show needs some work before I’d even BEGIN to compare it to idol.

I loved them all, Sabra was great … but in truth I was rooting for NEIL to win it. I’m surprised not to see more support for him here … I didn’t notice him so much right away but in the last few weeks he really soared and caught my attention … that man can move and he’s so hot!
