A somber Black Team greets us this week, reflecting on their devastating loss at last week’s weigh-in. “My team is just distraught today,” an uncharacteristically-soft Jillian says, offering hugs. “They were crushed by the Blue Team.” They feel it, too, although Maggie, perhaps most touched by losing her friend Jenn in the elimination, comes to the game with a newfound determination to win. Jillian gives Team Black a pep talk, and gets to the bottom of the crummy weigh-in results. Seems the ladies aren’t eating enough – 500 or 600 calories a day – and that, combined with six hours a day in the gym (yes, I said SIX HOURS A DAY), is enough to shut down their metabolisms. Jillian has a plan to get the girls eating again, and losing again. Will her plan pan out on the scale?
First there are some challenges to get through. The teams gather in the gym and are greeted by Alison and a row of mysterious-looking booths. Inside each booth, 100 caramel-filled chocolate candies. Looks like it’s another Temptation Challenge – the winner (the person who eats the most candies in five minutes, or the first person to eat all 100 candies, whichever comes first) earning the right to swap any one player from his or her team for any one player on the other team. Mark, always about the game, begins eating immediately. Brittany thinks it over and decides she’s in for the game as well. But she thinks it over too long – she eats only 15 while Mark puts away 43. Mark…*yawn*…wins…*yawn*…again. However, Mark decides that he likes the teams just the way they are and makes no changes.
Speaking of Mark…He’s perhaps the toughest competitor Loser has ever seen. And he’s successful. But a visit to the doc tonight has him in tears. Seems he’s developed a stress fracture in his shin and is prohibited from any lower body workouts. Trainer Bob’s not worried in the least, but Mark’s afraid that this injury will mean game over for him.
While we’ve got some down time, Dan uses it to hike to the top of the Biggest Loser of the Week mountain (…again…) and claim his prize. He gets to the top, expecting to have to choose between “luxury,” “family,” and “gameplay” like always, but is instead greeted with three envelopes, all of which say “family.” Just as he’s trying to figure out what this is all about, he turns around to find his older brother Joe standing behind him. There are hugs and tears, and one amazed brother who can’t believe how awesome Dan looks after such a short time. Of course Dan’s going to share his good fortune. He and Joe hike back down the hill to find Jackie, who hops off the treadmill and wraps herself around her sons. “For that brief moment, it was all worth it,” Dan says.
The second challenge of the night takes place in a culinary school. Alison tells them that they won’t need their workout gear for this one – it’s going to be a cooking challenge. The teams will be taking recipes from culinary great, Rocco Dispirito, and making them healthy. Rocco will judge the challenge himself, and will also deliver half the prize. That’s right, the winning team gets a meal cooked especially for them by Rocco himself, and they also are promised “special treats from home.”
Looks like a tough but fun challenge, and in the end it comes down to whose meal had the least calories. Trent and Roger’s dessert, which boasted a few tablespoons of butter, blows it for the Blue Team and it’s a much-needed victory for the Black Team. To their surprise, they actually get to assist Rocco in the kitchen, learning a few tips on healthy cooking. Yum!
After, the Blue Team gathers around a TV for their homemade treats: videos from home. Of course there are plenty of tears, but none more heart wrenching than poor Paul’s sobs after hearing Kelly’s boyfriend wish her luck and talk about kissing her when she gets back home. Kelly gets miffed by Paul’s tearful outburst, saying he’s taking away from her moment. “He’s a good man; he’s just not my life partner,” she says (C’mon, Kelly, give the guy another chance!).
After a quickie Last Chance Workout (where the old Blue vs. Black rivalry has Jillian in her comfy zone), it’s off to the weigh-in. Everyone puts up big numbers, but the pressure’s on the Black Team. One man down, it’s going to be extra tough to put up enough numbers to take down the Blue Team. The Blue Team takes off a combined 40 pounds. The Black Team (bolstered by Bernie who proudly says of his 13 pound loss, “I’m bringin’ sexy back!”) loses a combined 47 pounds for the win. It’ll be the Blue Team in the Elimination Room tonight.
Not one to let their one hour mulling-over time go to waste, Jackie makes the rounds. First she visits Trent & Roger and, citing Trent’s “extreme homesickness,” makes a deal with Roger that they’ll vote Trent off. Then she visits Jay & Mark, asking them to make the same deal. They say they’ll do it. She presses them to “swear on their children’s lives,” and they agree (…said the spider to the fly…).
But when the team gets into the Elimination Room, Roger, Trent, Jay, and Mark all vote for Jackie, sending her home instead. Jackie’s ticked, saying she would’ve never sworn on her kids’ lives and gone back on it (she did not, however, say anything about how the pinky swear, double-dog dare, or stick-a-needle-in-my-eye would hold up in the Elimination Room…). Dan’s super-miffed at the rest of the guys, and Alison warns them that they’ll have to work out their trust issues because they’re still a team. In tears, he hugs Mom and sends her packing.
Today Jackie looks about 20 years younger. At 176 pounds, she’s lost a total of 70 pounds and has made fitness a priority in her life. “I’m not gonna doubt myself anymore,” she says.
