The Hollywood writer’s strike has left scripted programming in the dust and reality shows booming. To battle the dry spell of entertainment, CBS delivered its first ever winter edition of Big Brother with 16 players vying for a half-million dollars. With Valentine’s Day around the corner Big Brother came up with a creative twist — the new contestants (all single and looking for love) were paired with somebody in the housewho was determined to be “compatible” with them. Each couple, for the first time in BB history would be forced to sleep in bed together, compete together, make every decision together and be evicted together. The twist brings the appropriate subtitle: ‘Til Death Do You Part.An interesting array of personalities, from a bartender to a paralegal, the women arrived to the house first. Natalie, Jen, Allison and Sheila were the first to enter discovering that every bedroom was locked. Sharon, Amanda and Chelsia then entered the house. The women realized that love was a theme based on all of the quotations on the walls. Then the men arrived. Ryan, Adam, Parker, Alex and Joshuah got to go in and meet the women first. In Big Brother tradition, players with histories were soon reunited. Jen, a bartender from Ohio, and her boyfriend, Ryan, are competing all the while keeping it a secret that they are the only true couple. When Ryan came in the house, Jen acted like she had never met him before. In a laughable moment, she kept asking him what his name was. The last four men entered (Matt, James, Neil and Jacob) providing another jaw-dropping reunion. Sharon spotted her ex, Jacob. They had been together for 12 years and thought they had found their true love in each other when Jacob cheated on her. Sharon was visibly upset and Jacob walked away to avoid an awkward situation. After the traditional introductions, Host Julie Chen came on the screen to tell the players the twist — that they were going to be matched with their “soulmate.” The pairs were announced in random order and the couples were then sent to choose their beds. Paired up for the duration of the competition are:-Alex and Amanda.
-James and Chelsia.
-Natalie and Matt.
-Jen was paired with Parker and not her boyfriend Ryan.
-Joshuah was paired with Neil.
-Jacob was of course put with his ex Sharon.
-The final two pairs: Ryan and Allison, Sheila and Adam, were told no beds were left and that they were to share sleeping bags. Sheila was upset about her match saying that Adam is not a tall, dark and handsome guy. The tension was high as she complained about him to everybody. What seemed to upset her the most was the fact that he called her “ma.”

After the couples chose their rooms and became more acquainted with one another, they were taken outside to compete for power. In “Falling For You,” the couples had to hang on to each other — literally. One would be harnessed and raised into the air all the while holding onto their partner below them. The last team hanging together would win and earn the right to make the sole decision of which couple to evict. Slowly raised into the air, Sheila quit just past the five-minute mark, which completely upset Adam. Next out was Joshuah and Neil within nine minutes. After two more couples fell (Amanda and Alex; Sharon and Jacob), Chen announced that the heart-shaped pillows on the beds below were worth $10,000 to the winning couple if they could reach it, which would risk falling. Allison and Ryan were out quickly as she tried to reach the pillow. Just moments after Chelsia grabbed her prize pillow, she fell. That leftJen andParker (who had a pillow) against Matt and Natalie (who didn’t even try to get one). Moments later,Jen and Parkerbecame the first power couple claiming victory and a $10,000 prize after Matt and Natalie bowed out.
Wednesday night’s episode will bring the first eviction decided solely by Jen and Parker. Let the strategizing begin!
