Extreme Makeover Home Edition Builds Home For Family Who Helps Foster Care Children

Last week, Extreme Makeover Home Edition built a home for a family who was actively involved in helping the homeless. This week, Extreme Makeover Home Edition once again comes to the aid of a family who spends their time helping others. Ty Pennington and his team travel to Warwick, Rhode Island to build a new home for the Silva family.

Ken and Doreen Silva started out as foster parents six years ago. It wasn’t long before they had opened up their home to over a dozen children. The Silva family has adopted three boys and cares for some special needs children.

Going beyond just taking foster children into their own home, the Silva family also helps other children in the Rhode Island foster care system find homes. The Silva family does this through speaking engagements and public advocacy. In addition to supporting foster care, the Silva family supports open adoption.

The Silva family had done all this, even though they only have one source of income, which is from Ken’s work as a garbage truck driver. Unfortunately, the Silvas recently learned that their children had high levels of lead in their systems. This information led to an investigation which uncovered dangerous levels of lead in the home and the backyard.

Because of their limited income, they have struggled to fix problems in their home. If the Silvas don’t fix the lead problem, then they are at risk of losing their foster children to the Health Department.

Ty Pennington, the designers, local builder Oldport Homes, and volunteers will help to rebuild the Silva family home so that it is safe from the lead dangers. Extreme Makeover: Home Edition airs on Sunday, May 4 from 8 PM to 9 PM ET on ABC.
